Make the Best of Your Travel Plans This Weekend [Video]

Make the Best of Your Travel Plans This WeekendThe holidays are upon us, and if you're going to spend them with faraway family and friends, you're probably going to be dealing with the stress that is traveling. Here are some of our best tips for making travel as pain-free as possible.

Photo remixed from an original by Ingy the Wingy.

Buying Plane Tickets

Assuming that flying is the more economical option for your travel, you'll want to make sure you've booked those tickets a good eight weeks in advance for the best prices?and on a Tuesday afternoon, if you can help it. If you're flying internationally, you might find better deals on the foreign version of that airline's web site. If not, using one of our favorite travel booking sites is the best way to get inexpensive tickets, and with a few travel ninja skills, you should be able to get some shockingly low-cost tickets.

Make the Best of Your Travel Plans This WeekendAs you're buying your tickets, make sure you're not only getting the best price possible, but setting yourself up for a good flight. Use a service like ExpertFlyer to get the best seats or to get on a sold out flight, and make sure your plane has Wi-Fi if you want internet access in the air. Avoid airlines that offer elite status for better seats, and if you're a little short on miles, you can buy and sell them directly from the airline to get a nice upgrade or two. Having the perfect rewards card for traveling helps, too.

Packing

Make the Best of Your Travel Plans This WeekendBaggage fees are at an all-time high, so you want to do everything in your power to make it on just your carry-ons. We've featured a lot of packing methods over the years, but you can't go wrong with the bundle method?it'll save you space without getting unsightly wrinkles in your clothes. Make sure you know how to fold those more awkward clothes, like suit coats, too.

Start with a good packing list, and don't forget to include some of the more unusual (but incredibly useful) things. As far as what to pack in packing cubes will help you pack super efficiently, and product packaging makes a dandy travel case for your gadgets. Your toiletries bag is a no-brainer, but to make your life easier, establish a permanent one you only use for travel and just throw it in your bag when you go?that way you don't leave anything behind.

Surviving On Travel Day

Make the Best of Your Travel Plans This WeekendWhen it's time to actually head out, make sure your home is well-protected and you get to the airport on time. Keep a close eye on your itinerary with a service like Tripit, and if your flight gets cancelled, you can rebook it more easily if you don't follow the airline's instructions. If you're going to the airport with family, you can actually walk them to the gate if you ask, too.

Once you're on the plane, you can use some evil schemes to make sure your flight is perfect, including (but not limited to) getting Wi-Fi without paying for it and even flying first class without paying extra. Of course, you could always just buy a one-day lounge pass to get better service, too?you know, if you aren't evil.

We've featured tons of travel tips over the year (not to mention devoted an entire episode of the show to it), so for more tips, be sure to check out our #travel tag before you leave. And, as always, share your favorite tips with us in the comments below.

This Week's Top Downloads [Download Roundup]

Nov 19, 2011 5:00 PM 17,708 0
  • Five Best Desktop Comic Book Readers (Windows/Mac/Linux) There's a certain nostalgia to reading a paper comic book and flipping the pages, but if you can get digital copies of your favorite comics and you can use your computer's large display to read them, why not? This week we're going to take a look at five apps that can make downloading and reading comics on your computer fun and easy.
  • Win7s? Brings Mac-Like Screen Corners to Windows 7 (Windows) Win7s? brings one of Mac OS X's best features to Windows, letting you trigger different actions by moving your mouse to one of the corners on your screen.
  • The Best Disc Burning App for Windows (Windows) Windows has more disc burning apps than we can count, but a few notable programs stand out from the pack. Our favorite is CDBurnerXP for its long list of features and easy-to-use interface.
  • The Best Terminal Emulator for Linux (Linux) While your terminal emulator of choice depends a lot on personal preference, it's quite clear that the most powerful terminal emulator on Linux is the feature-filled Terminator.
  • Any.DO Is a Crazy Intuitive, Gesture-Based To-Do App for Android (Android) Android has a lot of great to-do apps, but few of them are as easy to use as Any.DO. You can add tasks by voice, manage them with simple gestures, and even use its predictive features to instantly add common tasks to your to-do list.
  • Simplier is a Lightweight Music Player for Macs that Uses Your iTunes Library (Mac) Sure most of us use iTunes to purchase music, but playing that music in iTunes is kind of a pain. For a lot less bloat and a more streamlined experience give Simplier a try-it's a simple music player that uses your existing iTunes music library.
  • Logo Maker for Chrome Gives You an Interactive Canvas to Design Your Own Logo (Chrome) If you have a web site or business, or just want a logo to identify yourself on social networks, Logo Maker is a Chrome add-on that gives you a canvas you can use to add and scale an image, apply text under it, and then export it as a PNG that you can add to your web site or upload as a profile pic, all without installing an image editor.
  • Tincta Is a Free, Fully-Featured Programming Text Editor (Mac) Our favorite programming text editor for Mac costs $40, so we're always excited when a good and free option comes along. Tincta is just that, offering several great developer-friendly features like code syntax highlighting, line numbering, autocomplete brackets, and much more.
  • Acoustic Ruler Pro Turns Your iPhone into a Sonic Ruler (iOS) Chances are you don't have a ruler on you at all times, but you probably carry your phone with you everywhere you go. Acoustic Ruler Pro is an app that converts your iOS device and its headphones into a ruler for quick measurements.
  • Evernote Clearly Makes Web Pages More Readable and Transportable Into Evernote (Chrome) Albeit a little late, Evernote has jumped on the improved web site readability bandwagon and introduced a new feature called Clearly. Much like most browser extensions and bookmarklets, it takes a given web site and converts the layout into a more readable format. This makes clipping web content to Evernote a lot nicer as you won't have to deal with improper formatting as the page transitions to your notebook.

Shape of iPhones, iPads to come? (Appolicious)

iLounge is claiming inside knowledge of the shape of things to come for Apple in 2012: a teardrop-shaped iPhone and a slightly thicker iPad.

Jeremy Horwitz, editor-in-chief of iLounge, offers these forecasts from ?our most reliable source? in his Backstage blog.

The new look for iPhone has been rumored before and didn?t happen in 2011 with the iPhone 4S. So only time will tell if this forecast is on the mark for summer 2012, when the new phone is expected.

?We?ve been told that the device will have a 4-inch display and will be 8mm longer than before, with a metal casing (probably aluminium),? Horwitz said.

That display would be an increase from the current 3.5 inches.

Josh Lowensohn said in CNET: ?The move was widely expected with any serious redesign in the run up to the unveiling of the iPhone 4S last month, given the popularity of the size among rival device makers.?

He noted that a metal body was also rumored before the introduction of iPhone 4S.

He said: ?Apple has used metal in the casing of all its iPhones thus far, going from using it around the edge of the screen as a bezel, to an external antenna band that makes up the side of the iPhone 4 and 4S. But during the company's unveiling of the 4S last month, Apple made a point to note that it was still using glass.?

Is thinner no longer everything at Apple?

As to the iPad 3, Horwitz said an extra 0.7mm is needed ?in order to accommodate the twin light bar system needed for its higher-resolution display. It?s currently on track for a March timeframe release, and according to our source could be publicly shown as early as January, depending on conditions.?

Eric Slivka said in MacRumors notes iPad 2 ?currently checks in 8.8 mm thick, which would make the iPad 3 approximately 8 percent thicker than the iPad 2 but still substantially thinner than the 13.4 mm original iPad.?

Salesforce.com shares drop on tepid outlook (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Web-based software maker Salesforce.com Inc forecast current-quarter earnings broadly in line with Wall Street estimates and posted a quarterly net loss as its marketing and sales costs increased sharply.

The tepid outlook from one of the leaders in Internet-based "cloud" computing suggests it will not avoid the effects of broad cutbacks in corporate spending which have ravaged other technology firms.

Salesforce shares fell 6 percent after hours.

Chief Executive Marc Benioff said he was optimistic about companies' spending on technology and marketing, despite economic difficulties in Europe and Japan.

"I don't feel like we are going into a recession," he said on a conference call with analysts.

The San Francisco-based company reported a net loss of $3.8 million, or 3 cents per share, for the fiscal third quarter, compared with a profit of $21.1 million, or 15 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter.

The loss was due to a 49 percent jump in operating costs to $465.8 million, which outpaced sales growth. The cost of stock-based compensation more than doubled to $57 million from $26 million a year ago.

Excluding certain items, such as the stock-based compensation, its profit was 34 cents per share, beating the 31 cent average estimate by analysts polled by Thomson Reuters

I/B/E/S.

Sales rose 36 percent to $584 million, surpassing the $571.5 million expected by analysts.

For the current quarter, the company forecast profit, excluding items, of 39 cents to 40 cents per share, compared to Wall Street's estimate of 40 cents.

For fiscal 2013, it made its first sales forecast, of $2.88 billion to $2.92 billion, which includes projected revenue from Model Metrics, an acquisition expected to close this quarter. Excluding that deal, analysts are expecting sales of $2.79 billion.

Salesforce.com shares dropped 7 percent in after-hours trading to $117.78, after closing at $126.09 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Self-help guru gets 2 years in sweat lodge deaths

PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) ? A charismatic self-help author who led an Arizona sweat lodge ceremony that turned deadly was sentenced Friday to two years in prison.

Yavapai County Superior Court Judge Warren Darrow handed down three, two-year sentences, to be served concurrently. He also ordered James Arthur Ray to pay more than $57,000 in restitution.

"I see and I find that the aggravating circumstance of emotional harm is so strong and such that probation is simply unwarranted in this case," Darrow said.

The courtroom was silent as he handed down the sentence. The victims' families held hands, as did Ray's parents and brother.

Afterward authorities immediately took custody of Ray, who will serve his time with the state Department of Corrections. His parents, Joyce and Gordon Ray, said they hoped to get a chance to meet with him briefly after the hearing. They declined to comment further.

Defense attorney Luis Li said an appeal was likely. "We just hope the process of healing can begin and the victims' families can find some peace," he said.

County Attorney Sheila Polk said she was disappointed that the judge didn't give Ray the maximum sentence of nine years in prison. She said she made a strong case for accountability, justice and deterrence ? "all the reasons a more significant prison sentence should have been imposed."

But, Polk added, "certainly some prison over probation is better than no prison at all."

Ray had faced probation to nine years in prison after being convicted on a trio of negligent homicide counts. Authorities originally charged Ray with manslaughter, but jurors rejected arguments that he was reckless in his handling of the October 2009 ceremony.

Prosecutors urged Darrow to hand down the maximum sentence to keep Ray off the self-help circuit and from harming others. Ray's attorneys said probation was best for a man who showed remorse, lacked prior criminal history and is the sole caretaker for ailing parents.

Ray's motivational mantra drew dozens of people to a retreat nestled in the scrub forest near Sedona with a promise that the sweat lodge ceremony typically used by American Indians to cleanse the body would help them break through whatever was holding them back in life. It was the culminating event of his five-day "Spiritual Warrior" seminar.

Participants began showing signs of distress about half way through the two-hour ceremony. By the time it was over, some were vomiting, struggling to breathe and lying lifeless on the ground. Two people ? Kirby Brown, 38, of Westtown, N.Y., and James Shore, 40, of Milwaukee ? were pronounced dead. Liz Neuman, 49, of Prior Lake, Minn., slipped into a coma and never regained consciousness. She died more than a week later at a Flagstaff hospital.

The trial was a mix of lengthy witness testimony and legal wrangling that lasted four months. Witnesses painted conflicting pictures of Ray, with some describing him as a coach who encouraged participants to do their best to endure the heat but never forced them to remain in the sweat lodge. Others said they learned through breathing exercises, a 36-hour fast, and a game in which Ray portrayed God that they dare not question him and lost the physical and mental ability to care for themselves or others.

Prosecutors contended that Ray ratcheted up the heat to dangerous levels, ignored pleas for help and watched as participants were dragged out of the sweat lodge. Ray's attorneys suggested that toxins or poisons contributed to the deaths, but jurors said that theory was not credible.

Ray's attorneys made at least nine requests for a retrial or mistrial based on what they say were errors by the prosecution. While Darrow ruled that prosecutors broke disclosure rules, he rejected each of the defense requests. The case is bound for appeal.
