Colorado Shelter Takes Responsibility for Tainted Food

A Colorado shelter is taking responsibility for tainted food that caused 60 people to require hospitalization last Sunday. Here are the details.

* According to an official statement offered by Brad Meuli, President and CEO of the Denver Rescue Mission, an internal investigation revealed that staff at the Lawrence Street Shelter did not follow established procedures for handling pre-prepared food donations on Sunday, July 22.

* The Denver Post reported on Thursday that about 340 people ate at the mission on Sunday, with an estimated 200 thought to have eaten tainted turkey there.

* The sudden illnesses reportedly forced the closure of a portion of Lawrence Street while people were evaluated by emergency crews and at least 14 ambulances were needed to transport affected individuals to area hospitals.

* Meuli stated that the mission is working closely with the city health departments and is taking the matter very seriously. He said that he is unaware of this ever happening before at the Denver Rescue Mission and that the mission is confident that this was an isolated incident.

* All of the people who were hospitalized have been treated and released, Meuli reported, and many have returned to stay at the mission.

* According to Meuli, pre-prepared food will not be served at the shelter until after a health department investigation has been completed. All other facility services are available as normal, including distribution of food to partner agencies and acceptance of community food donations.

* The Denver Rescue Mission provides over 600,000 meals for the poor and needy each year, Meuli said.

* According to the mission's website , Denver Rescue mission is the oldest full-service Christian charity in the Rocky Mountain region. It was founded as a "Rescue Home" for women in 1892.

* Meals are provided by the Denver Rescue Mission every day of the year at its Lawrence Street Shelter, Harvest Farm, Crossing and Champa House facilities. Food boxes are also assembled for the elderly and sick and those who are unable to attend the facilities for meal times.

* In addition, the mission provides beds for homeless people, including 300 beds available for men at the Lawrence Street Shelter. The shelter also features a clinic where the homeless can receive medical, dental, nutritional, chiropractic, optical and hearing services.

* According to Yahoo! Health , the symptoms of most common types of food poisoning start within two to six hours of eating the food. Possible symptoms include abdominal cramps, diarrhea, fever and chills, headache, nausea and vomiting, and weakness. Most people fully recover within 12-48 hours.
