When people look at a Muslim woman, "fitness diva" is not a term that comes to mind. But that perception may change if certified personal trainer and fitness expert Mubarakah Ibrahim has her way. "No matter where you choose to worship all woman want to know the same thing, how do you get rid of cellulite," is what Ibrahim said to Oprah Winfrey when she appeared as a guest on her show. "Muslim women have some of the same concerns about weight loss, health and fitness as every other woman, we just find strategic ways of dealing with them that falls within Islam," Ibrahim explains.
After two years of hosting the Fitness Summit in New Haven, Ct, that attracted Muslim women from all over the world, Ibrahim has created what she says is a "more goal specific" program for Muslim women who want to be proactive about their health. Although she says it's not a "Biggest Loser" type of retreat the itinerary includes morning Outdoor Boot Camp and afternoon nutrition lessons and workshops strategically situated after each of the 5 daily prayers.
"Muslim women in North America have a fitness predicament, because of their loose clothes and Islamic values of modesty they do not have to worry about fitting into a holiday black dress or summer bikini, as a result many Muslim women don't exercise as often as they should," says Ibrahim, who was born and raised Muslim. "And for stricter practicing Muslims that don't intermingle with men, co-ed gyms pose a greater challenge to being physically fit." I want to help Muslim women and girls to discover that fitness and Islam are a natural fit."
The event is being held in at a private retreat center in the Northwest Hill of CT in an all-female environment where participants will have a choice from various fitness classes and health workshops. Yoga, Kickboxing, swimming, Water Aerobics and Core Conditioning fitness classes will go along side of workshops on weight loss, hypnosis, nutrition, Prophetic medicine and motivational speakers.
The 3-day event will bring together Muslim women professionals from all across the North America in effort to "to encourage Muslim women and girls to live a healthy lifestyle by staying physically fit and taking a proactive stance on their health". Co-sponsored by Fit Muslimah.com, an online gym for Muslim Women, Aziza Magazine, a quarterly publication for Modern American Muslim Women, Tri-State Media, a newspaper for and by Muslims in the tri-state area, and Fat Loss 10: The 10 Commandments of Fat Loss, the event is the only one of its kind in the world and is expected to attract Muslim women from all over the world.
