Hurt golf course cyclist uses cell to summon help

DRACUT -- A 61-year-old man who tumbled off his bicycle and was momentarily knocked unconscious on the Meadow Creek Golf Course Friday morning was able to summon help on his cellphone, police said.

The cyclist, a resident of Regency Drive in the Meadow Creek development, had gone for a spin on the golf course's cart paths when he lost control and tumbled from the bike in the area of the 14th hole where the terrain is especially steep, said Dracut Deputy Police Chief David Chartrand.

The man had hit his head in the fall and was immobilized, disoriented and unsure of his precise location on the course when he dialed 911 and was connected to a police dispatcher at 7:36 a.m., said Chartrand.

The injured man told the dispatcher he could see and hear an active construction site on the property, a short distance away. Using that information, and the volume of their approaching cruiser's siren coming from the victim's end of the phone call as a guide, the responding officers were able to locate the man in 15 minutes at 7:51 a.m., according to Chartrand.

Officers reported the victim had sustained injuries to his face and elbow. An ambulance was summoned to the location and the man was transported to Lowell General Hospital for treatment, Chartrand said.
