When you are presented with a destination like Winter Park, Colorado, you don?t have to search long and hard to come up with a topic. If a town calls itself Winter Park, there should be plenty of cold-weather recreation options available.
No worries - Winter Park more than lives up to its snowy moniker. You can reach this town via the Denver International Airport, which is about an hour and a half drive by car. There?s no shortage of lodges, ski resorts, and hotels to sleep in once you arrive, although you may find yourself outdoors far more than inside during your stay. Another popular option is a vacation rental property. Vacation rentals in Colorado provide a bit more freedom and privacy than a hotel room, and they are often a good deal, especially for a family or a group of friends who will need several rooms. If you can?t find an ideal rental in Winter Park, the town of Fraser is just six miles down the road.
Up at an elevation of 9,000 feet and nestled in Colorado?s Northwest region, with Arapaho National Forest nearby, it?s easy to see why Winter Park is a magnet for skiers. Downhill skiers can enjoy some of the country?s most famous runs, while cross-country or Nordic skiers can swish through over 80 miles of trails that range from easy to adventurous. Snowboarders are also welcome to a variety of challenging and not-so-challenging runs. And there?s no shortage snow, either; on average, this area receives just over 350 inches of snow each year.
If skiing isn?t your idea of wintertime fun, there are still plenty of outdoor activities to do. These include snowmobiling down hundreds of miles of trails, including some within Arapaho National Forest (by permit only; contact your snowmobile tour company of choice to see if they offer it). Dog sledding and sleigh rides are offered as well, and free events at Hideaway Park include sledding and snowshoeing.
Finally, if all this winter fun leaves you a little chilly - or more than a little sore - you can steam away your aches and shivers in a spa. There are several to choose from within the Winter Park area, including independently run spas that are not part of any hotel or resort.
Winter Park thrives when the weather turns cold. Enjoy your stay in one of Colorado?s top skiing destinations!
