HP names Bill Veghte new COO, hands over the keys to HP Software

HP names Bill Veghte new COOAfter successfully piloting HP's software division and, presumably, performing well as the company's chief strategy officer, Bill Veghte is getting a promotion. Effective immediately he'll be taking over as COO of the struggling computer manufacturer and finally handing over the keys to HP Software. As Veghte is forced to give up his executive vice president's position, George Kadifa will be stepping it to take up the charge of leading the non hardware-based part of the business. The move will also mean that Veghte will be working even more closely with CEO Whitman, who expressed confidence in Veghte. The shakeup comes shortly on the heels of a particularly tough financial quarter and the announcement of 27,000 layoffs. Check out the complete PR after the break.

Project Glass revealed to have physical trackpad along right arm (video)

Image

Sergey Brin has appeared on The Gavin Newsom Show on Current TV to drop a few more enticing hints about Project Glass. While showing the presenter a picture he'd taken with the AR glasses, he revealed that the prototype is controlled with a trackpad running down the right* arm. He also talked about the device's genesis in Goggle's X Lab, which he described as an "advanced skunkworks" where "far-out projects" are developed -- it's also the department that occupies most of his time. While the units he and his colleagues have been wearing are very rough prototypes, the Google co-founder shared his private hope that the tech will make its way to general release next year. You can catch the extract in full in the video after the break.

*Right for the wearer, left for the observer. It depends entirely on your perspective.

Police: 'Hero' saved lives in Seattle shootings

SEATTLE (AP) ? Someone inside an artsy Seattle cafe where a gunman opened fire threw stools at the assailant during a shooting rampage police described as "callous, horrific and cold," a move that allowed others to run to safety.

Ian Lee Stawicki was armed with two .45-caliber handguns and began shooting Wednesday morning at Cafe Racer, killing four people. Police said he fled and later killed a female motorist, taking off with her SUV.

Stawicki later killed himself as police closed in.

Police said more could have been injured or even killed at the cafe were it not for the actions of the man, whom they did not identify. They did not say whether he was a patron or an employee.

"The hero picked up a stool and threw it at the suspect. Hit him. Picked up another stool, as the suspect is shooting and now pointing (a gun) at him and hits him with another stool," Assistant Chief Jim Pugel said.

"During that time, two or possibly three, people made their escape," he said, adding, "He saved three lives."

The slayings further frayed nerves in an already jittery city that has seen 21 homicides so far this year, as many as Seattle had in all of 2011.

"In my almost 30 years in this department, I've never seen anything more callous, horrific and cold," Deputy Chief Nick Metz said at a Thursday news conference after reviewing video footage of the killings.

The gunman's father struggled Thursday to understand how his son could have gone on a shooting rampage and apologized to the victims' families.

"The first thing I can say, and it doesn't go very far at this point, is I'm so sorry," Walter Stawicki said, his voice quivering. "It sounds so trite, that I feel their grief. ... I just hope they understand he wasn't a monster out to kill people."

The 21 homicides this year have the city's leaders wondering what if anything can be done.

"The city is stunned and seeking to make sense of it," Mayor Mike McGinn said. "I think we have to start by acknowledging the tremendous amount of grief that's out there from the families and friends of the victims."

In just over a month, a young woman was killed in a seemingly random drive-by shooting in a popular nightlife district and a father who was driving with his family was killed by a stray bullet fired during a fight involving people on the street.

While the city still has low murder rates, pressure is growing on the police to curtail the violence at a time when the department is facing accusations of excessive force. Police have told residents to expect more officers on patrol in high-crime areas.

McGinn said the highest priority would be addressing the "epidemic of gun violence that's plaguing the city." He said he'll look at redeploying officers, as well as legislation.

The gunman's family, meanwhile, is struggling with what could have been had they been able to get Stawicki help sooner.

Ian Stawicki, 40, had suffered from mental illness for years and gotten "exponentially" more erratic, his father said, but family members had been unable to get him to seek help.

Walter Stawicki said he was "bitter" that it was so hard to get his son help.

"He wouldn't hear it," he said. "We couldn't get him in, and they wouldn't hold him ... The only way to get an intervention in time is to lie and say they threatened you. Our hands were so tied."

Walter Stawicki recalled a son who liked dogs, kids and plants. He joined the U.S. Army after graduating high school, but the Army honorably discharged him after about a year, he said.

Since then, Ian Stawicki had bounced around serving as a roadie for bands and helping his mother with gardening.

According to the Seattle city attorney's office, police cited Stawicki in 1989 for carrying a concealed knife and, in 2008, a girlfriend who lived with him claimed he had assaulted her and had destroyed her property. She later recanted, and charges were dismissed because she would not cooperate with prosecutors.

Stawicki obtained a concealed weapons permit in 2010 from the Kittitas County Sheriff's Office. The permit shows he owned six firearms.

Other than a couple of traffic tickets and a fistfight with his brother several years ago ? charges were dropped ? his son had no criminal record, Walter Stawicki said.

"When you knew him and he liked you, he was the best friend you could have. He was an old-fashioned gentleman," he said. "But when he was having bad days, he scared people."

Stawicki also said he knew his son had guns, but he was more concerned that Ian ? a "bean pole" at 6-foot, 150 pounds ? would get in a physical altercation and lose.

Stawicki last spoke to his son the morning of the shooting. He recalled a cheerful conversation. "He handed the phone to his mother and I said, 'Gee, he sounds in a good mood.'

The only survivor of the cafe shooting, Leonard Meuse, was upgraded from critical to serious condition at Harborview Medical Center.

A memorial in front of the cafe grew Thursday as people stopped by to drop off flowers, cans of beer and toy instruments. Two of the victims, identified by friends as Drew Keriakedes, 49, and Joe Albanese, 52, were old-time musicians and regulars at the cafe, where they often played or simply held court.

"They were the life of this place," said Janna Silver, who had known them for a few years. "They were very welcoming, and they'd talk to anyone."

The King County medical examiner's office confirmed the identification of Keriakedes and also identified another cafe victim, Kimberly Layfield, 36.

The carjacked woman was identified as Gloria Leonidas, 52. The Seattle Times said she was a married mother of two from suburban Bellevue. The medical examiner's office does not release hometowns.

Formal identification of the other victims, as well as the victims' cause and manner of death, will be released Friday, the medical examiner's office said.

(AP) ? Aung San Suu Kyi was the star attraction at Thursday's opening of the World Economic Forum, where the Myanmar opposition leader signed autographs and smiled politely for pictures with delegates from around the world.

Diplomats and businessmen in dark suits jostled to get in close, holding aloft their iPhones and BlackBerrys to get a picture of Suu Kyi, who is on her first trip outside of Myanmar in 24 years.

Speakers paid tribute to the poised and elegant Suu Kyi, wearing purple silk in the front row.

"It's a full house," said Surin Pitsuwan, the secretary-general of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. "I don't know ? can we panelists can claim credit for that? Or is it because of The Lady?"

Many in Myanmar refer to Suu Kyi as "The Lady" in a gesture of respect but also because for years it was considered dangerous to utter her name aloud. The country's former military rulers were so afraid of Suu Kyi's popularity that they locked her under house arrest for 15 out of 22 years, during which time she won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991.

Suu Kyi was freed after Myanmar held elections in 2010. Since then, President Thein Sein has surprised much of the world by engineering sweeping reforms, including holding a by-election in April in which Suu Kyi won a seat in Parliament.

For her first outing on foreign soil, Suu Kyi on Wednesday visited downtrodden migrants who left Myanmar to find work in Thailand. She told them she would do all she could to reverse decades of economic ruin and make it possible for them to go home.

She planned to return to the area Thursday afternoon, after spending the morning at conference sessions on the global economy, Asian geopolitics and China's role in the region.

Escorted by security guards, she did not speak to the media. Nor did she raise her hand when panelists asked for questions ? even when the topic turned to Myanmar.

"It feels a bit presumptuous to talk about Burma in front of Daw Suu," said U.S. Senator Susan Collins, who met with Thein Sein and other senior officials in Myanmar this week. Daw is a term of respect in Myanmar.

The U.S. recently eased sanctions it imposed on Myanmar during the military's regime but has said more reforms are needed before the sanctions can be lifted.

"My impression is that Burma is on a tipping point. I'm cautiously optimistic Burma will go in the right direction," Collins said, using the country's former name as many activists prefer. "We look forward to further advice and council from Daw Suu."

Exxon investors support company on executive pay

DALLAS (AP) ? Exxon Mobil Corp.'s CEO had a good year in 2011 ? he got compensation valued at $25.2 million. Shareholders had a good year too, so on Wednesday they gave their approval to the oil giant's executive pay program.

Investors at Exxon's annual meeting cast about 78 percent of their shares in favor of the compensation-setting system, ignoring critics who said executive pay was too high.

Shareholders also voted against resolutions that took aim at a controversial method of drilling for natural gas and called on Exxon to set targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Similar resolutions have been defeated at previous Exxon meetings.

They also rejected a measure to ban discrimination against gays and transgender employees. The company said it already prohibits bias of any kind including for sexual orientation, but the measure's supporters complained that Exxon does not offer benefits to partners of gay employees.

Rising oil prices helped boost Exxon's net income by 35 percent to $41 billion in 2011, the company's best year since 2008. The stock rose 16 percent.

The company's board boosted Chairman and CEO Rex W. Tillerson's compensation by 17 percent, according to an analysis by The Associated Press. The combination of salary, stock awards and other compensation made Tillerson the 16th-highest paid executive among publicly traded U.S. companies last year.

Shareholder consultant ISS Proxy Advisory Services recommended that investors vote against Exxon's executive compensation, which it called excessive. ISS said Exxon failed to tie CEO pay to specific financial measurements or goals, "resulting in higher than justified rewards."

Another shareholder-advisory firm, Glass, Lewis & Co., said Exxon paid top officers more than many other large companies and allowed the board too much discretion in setting compensation. That "has left shareholders in the dark, unable to see a direct link between pay and performance."

Still, Glass Lewis said Exxon's pay policies have improved slightly, and it recommended voting for the company's executive compensation. The vote was nonbinding, but if it went against Exxon, the board would have felt pressured to change pay policy.

Exxon shares fell $2.14, or 2.6 percent, to close at $79.79 as stock markets and the price of oil both slumped.

Exxon shares have fallen 2 percent in the past year, roughly in line with major indexes. Over 10 years, the shares have risen 108 percent, about four times as much as the Dow Jones industrial average and the S&P 500 index.

Irving-based Exxon might have performed better in the past year, but its $29 billion purchase of natural gas producer XTO Energy in 2010 hasn't produced the hoped-for boost because of falling gas prices.

U.S. gas supplies have ballooned since the acquisition. Tillerson said Exxon knew there could be an oversupply of gas because of hydraulic fracturing or fracking, which has boosted production. But, he said, the company didn't expect the U.S. economy to remain so weak for so long, which has also undermined gas prices.

"There's no regrets," he said of the XTO deal.

One of Wednesday's resolutions called on Exxon to report on the risks it faces from opposition to hydraulic fracturing. ISS recommended a "yes" vote but, heeding the board's recommendation, shareholders rejected the measure 70.4 percent to 29.6 percent. Chevron Corp. shareholders voted against a similar resolution at that company's annual meeting in California.

Hydraulic fracturing is the high-pressure injection of water, sand and chemicals deep underground to break up rock formations and release more natural gas. This month, the Obama administration issued proposed new standards for "fracking" on federal land in hopes that states will regulate the practice on private land where most of the drilling is taking place in shale formations of the Northeast, the upper plains and Texas.

Environmentalists say that fracking chemicals have polluted underground water supplies, a claim that is disputed by energy industry officials. Tillerson conceded that fracking opponents have made a strong emotional case and said industry is fighting uphill against "the energy illiteracy of the public."

Referring to a scene in the 2010 documentary "Gasland" in which a landowner uses a cigarette lighter to ignite his well water ? allegedly because it's been contaminated by gas drilling ? Tillerson said it was hard to show that hydraulic fracturing doesn't contaminate well water, "but if you set it on fire, that's got a 'Wow!' factor to it. That's what we're up against."

Asia Satellite (HKG:1135): unfavourable finance bill passed

Asia Satellite Telecommunications (HKG:1135) (AST) has released a further announcement in relation to the finance bill previously proposed in India which, when passed by the Indian Parliament, would result in unfavourable consequences to the AST group's current tax proceedings in the Indian Courts.

It has come to the attention of AST's board of directors that the finance bill was recently passed by the Indian Parliament and was enacted with retrospective effect after presidential assent was given to it. Under the Indian Income Tax Act (as amended by the finance bill), revenues received from the provision of satellite transponder capacity to the AST group's customers which carry on business in India or earn income from any source in India will be charged to tax in India.

As the finance bill was enacted with retrospective effect, this would result in unfavourable consequences to the AST group's current tax proceedings in the Indian Courts where orders in favour of the group were made in the past. However, the portion of revenue earned by the group that would be deemed to be Indian sourced is yet to be decided by the Indian Courts and is therefore still uncertain.

The AST group is currently seeking clarifications from its legal and tax advisors in order to assess the potential exposure of the above to the group and is evaluating various options available to it to deal with the issues arising from the retrospective amendments to the Indian Income Tax Act introduced by the finance bill.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? After the 2001 terrorist attacks, California lawmakers sought a way to channel the patriotic fervor and use it to help victims' families and law enforcement. Their answer: specialty memorial license plates emblazoned with the words, "We Will Never Forget."

Part of the money raised through the sale of the plates was to fund scholarships for the children of California residents who perished in the attacks, while the majority ? 85 percent ? was to help fund anti-terrorism efforts.

But an Associated Press review of the $15 million collected since lawmakers approved the "California Memorial Scholarship Program" shows only a small fraction of the money went to scholarships. While 40 percent has funded anti-terror training programs, $3 million was raided by Gov. Jerry Brown and his predecessor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, to plug the state's budget deficit.

Millions more have been spent on budget items with little relation to direct threats of terrorism, including livestock diseases and workplace safety.

Moreover, the California Department of Motor Vehicles has been advertising the plates as helping the children of Sept. 11 victims even though the state stopped funding the scholarship program seven years ago. The specialty plate fund continues to take in $1.5 million a year.

Californians who lost loved ones in the attacks take the raid on the license plate fund as an affront to the memory of those who died.

"I can't believe that they would do that," said Candice Hoglan, who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and bought a plate to commemorate her nephew, Mark Bingham. "We're paying extra for the plate; we're making a point, and it means a lot to us."

Bingham was killed on United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania, and was one of the passengers who led the attempt to wrest control from the hijackers. His mother, Alice Hoagland, also was troubled by the program's apparent drift from its original purpose.

"I'm sorry that as we retreat in time from 9/11, we seem to be retreating in our resolve never to forget," she said in a telephone interview.

The plates, which cost an initial $50 plus a $40 annual renewal fee, feature an American flag partially obscured by clouds and the "never forget" slogan. Residents of California, where all four jetliners were bound when they were hijacked, have bought or renewed the plates more than 200,000 times since 2002.

Of the other states directly associated with the 2001 attacks, only Virginia has established a similar specialty plate program. Yet it did not set up a special fund for the proceeds of its "Fight Terrorism" plate.

For the past decade, the California DMV has said on its website that the money will "fund scholarships for the children of Californians who died in the September 11, 2001, terror attacks and helps California's law enforcement fight threats of terrorism." It advertises the program with the slogan, "Be a patriot."

While the DMV description of the program was not "totally disingenuous," the department should probably remove references to the scholarship program, said Joe DeAnda, a spokesman for the state treasurer's office, which disburses the money.

"It's out of date and it's on DMV to update that," he said.

Late Friday, the department modified the description of the license plate on its website to remove the reference to the scholarship program in response to the investigation by the AP, which began in March. Spokeswoman Jan Mendoza said the reason promotional materials were not updated sooner was "unknown."

The DMV still lists the scholarship program on the online and hardcopy form drivers fill out to buy the license plates, but Mendoza said the department will change this next time the forms are printed.

The legislation establishing the plates had earmarked 15 percent of the revenue for scholarships. Yet only $21,381 has reached the children and spouses of the three dozen California residents killed during the terrorist attacks. The state treasurer's office closed the scholarship program in 2005, the sign-up deadline for potential recipients, and has $60,000 in reserve.

The total amount dedicated to scholarships was 1.5 percent of the $5.5 million raised through the sale of the plates through 2005.

The original legislation said the remainder of the money would go to "law enforcement, fire protection, and public health agencies" to be used "exclusively for purposes directly related to fighting terrorism."

But in 2008, former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican, borrowed $2 million to close a budget gap. Last year, Brown, a Democrat, borrowed another $1 million.

Neither loan has been repaid nor are their deadlines to ensure they will be. Elizabeth Ashford, a spokeswoman for Brown, said the loans have done no harm.

"We're trying to simultaneously balance the budget and fund important programs," she said. "If there was an indication that borrowing this money was going to negatively impact this program, we wouldn't borrow the money."

The rest of the money has gone to a wide array of budgets and programs.

The Legislature sent $3.7 million to the California Department of Food and Agriculture, according to the Department of Finance, to establish an online food monitoring database and implement a variety of worker safety programs, including hiring industrial hygienists to tend to worker health.

But it is difficult to say precisely where the money has gone. Late Friday, the agriculture department delivered documents it said were in response to a California Public Records Act request the AP filed eight weeks earlier.

The response contained itemized budget reports going back six years and listing payments for all types of government functions, ranging from salaries and benefits, to printing costs and communication equipment. Among the details: $18,163 for furniture in 2006 and $11,492 for auto inspection in 2009.

The response also included a legislative report on the threats the agriculture department is targeting with an online database the license plate program helps fund . A similar report from 2006, when the license plate money was first authorized, lists bioterrorism as a potential danger. But the 2011 report focuses on food safety and livestock concerns, including foot-and-mouth disease and meat and poultry monitoring.

Director of Animal Health and Food Safety Services Annette Whiteford said the department does not track license plate money separately from other funds.

She said it would be wasteful to reserve the money exclusively for anti-terrorism work. For example, the department uses some of the money to buy safety suits that would be essential during an anthrax attack but also are useful for routine food investigations.

"The things that I worry about in the animal food safety division are very high consequence events, but very infrequent. So I always try to leverage those resources," she said.

Another $2 million has gone to programs that aim to protect Californians from all manner of potential threats, not just those related to terrorism.

The California Emergency Management Agency used nearly $1 million in memorial license plate money for general operations, including administrative costs, buying and fueling cars, and hiring a person from 2007 to 2009 to coordinate five so-called "fusion centers," according to documents obtained through a Public Records Act request.

The other $1 million went directly to the fusion centers, which were founded after the 2001 attacks to focus on terrorist threats but have since switched to an "all crimes" approach that includes gang activity and natural disasters.

Herb Wesson, who wrote the license plate bill when he was speaker of the California Assembly, said he was saddened to hear how the money had been spent.

"I understand the financial climate they find themselves in, but they are not following the spirit and intent of the legislation," said Wesson, now president of the Los Angeles City Council. "The lion's share of the money was supposed to be given to local law enforcement so that they could beef up their anti-terrorism operations."

About 40 percent of the total raised to date, or $6 million, has gone to anti-terrorism training programs for firefighters and law enforcement officers. There is a slight discrepancy between the DMV's revenue figures and the Department of Finance's expenditure figures that neither agency could explain.

Patricia Anderson, who paid $98 for a personalized memorial plate reading "WE R 4US," said she signed up for the program primarily to show respect for victims of the 9/11 attacks. Anderson said she was disheartened but not surprised to learn that much of the money has gone to fill the state deficit or used for general purposes.

"That's California," said Anderson, who now lives near Austin, Texas. "It's kind of a given these days ? nothing is spent on what it's supposed to be."

Unpaid Overtime: Wage And Hour Lawsuits Have Skyrocketed In The Last Decade

Do American companies have a problem with paying their employees? A growing number of workers seem to think so.

Collective action lawsuits alleging wage and hour violations have risen 400 percent in the last 11 years, according to a recent post at CNNMoney. In 2011, there were more than 7,000 such lawsuits filed in federal court -- a huge increase since the turn of the century.

These lawuits involve workers who claim they didn't get paid the full amount for all the hours they worked -- either because they were improperly listed as ineligible for overtime, or because they simply never got the money for the work they put in.

Claims of this kind have become incredibly pervasive in recent years. Lawyers cited in a 2007 Bloomberg story on wage and hour lawsuits estimated that companies may be paying out more than a billion dollars a year to resolve these cases.

It's hard to think of a major company that hasn't had at least one wage and hour suit brought against it lately. In early May, to name one recent example, Taco Bell was hit with a lawsuit alleging that employees were often forced to work unpaid hours -- just the latest in a series of similar accusations the chain has faced.

Other companies whose workers have accused them of denying proper pay include Starbucks, Wal-Mart, Bank of America, Oracle, IBM, Fremantle Media and the Hooters restaurant chain.

In general, the weak economy and sluggish labor market have reduced the amount of leverage employees have in their relationship with their managers -- meaning it's been especially easy in recent years for bosses to demand ever more of workers while paying them the same amount as before.

You can be a freelance photographer, expert or novice photographer, and even a business owner to make money online in the field of photography. The benefit of doing the web based photography business is that there?s no huge investment required like that in the physical store business. You can also spread word about your business effortlessly and quickly over the internet. There are numerous tools and resources available on the internet that you may use for your benefit.

If you?re planning to start an online photography business, it will not take over couple of hours of your day. You will have to investigate the market, become familiar with the tools, construct your web site, and maintain it. There?s no heavy investment required, no huge manpower, or even a lot of your time. Web based photography businesses are easy to run and make money. You have to be a little dedicated to market it and put in top quality pictures.

Due to the raise on the web-based photography business and more people switching to it daily, the prices of digital photographs, pcs, and registration prices for photo upload web sites have reduced. To make your business flourish, you may buy a great digital camera and grasp it. Choose the type of photography you desire to concentrate. It could be stock photography, freelance as well as product photography. You may use the photo editing applications to fix and modify your photos. Then upload it to your site.

The marketing part is the hardest part. The first step is to put the right tags and descriptions for the photos. If your image is to appear in the top search lists, the tagging must be correct. This will ensure your page gets listed and traffic increases. Put some advertisements in your web site for that extra money. Slowly people will discover your site and begin visiting it regularly. Therefore you will have to spend some time everyday to update and maintain your web site well. It should be user-friendly and attractive.

The pricing of the photos have to be nominal at first or you must be an established photographer. If you are a beginner and start pricing excessive, people will begin checking other websites available online. Once you get established and have many dedicated visitors you have all rights to raise your price and begin earning more.

Sim Family: it is by divine design that the role of motherhood ...

Divine Design of Motherhood emphasizes the nurturing and teaching of the next generation

By Michelle Sim given 6/13/2010

There are some lines attributed to Victor Hugo which read:

?She broke the bread into two fragments and gave them to her children, who ate with eagerness.

?She hath kept note for herself,? grumbled the sergeant.

?Because she is not hungry?, said a soldier.

?No,? said the sergeant, ?because she is a mother.??

Elder L. Tome Perry said, ?I believe it is by divine design that the role of motherhood emphasizes the nurturing and teaching of the next generation.?

We learn from this that mothers are designed to nurture and teach the next generation.? And I think not only that, it is imperative for us to do so.

But how do we forth in teaching our children, and knowing what is best for them?

-Mothers Intuition-

I remember many years ago my mother teaching me about intuition, more importantly, mother?s intuition.? She taught me that as mothers we do have a special connection with our children-in knowing what they need and what is best for them.? Mother?s intuition partnered with the Holy Spirit can be a powerful tool in raising our children.

My brother was born with a kidney infection.? Through fasting, prayers, and a few miracles he made it home to us.? A short time later my mom had a feeling she needed to take him in, that he may have an infection again.? The doctor was a little cocky and did a basic test on him and said, no, no everything is fine.? But she knew what she felt and said NO you run a full test on him.? He rolled his eyes and agreed to do more testing.? He came back a short time later and said well, you were right he does have an infection again.? He never questioned her judgment after that.

I think many of us have had these experiences and we see how important it is to follow the spirit and what we feel inside.

In a two-year study conducted at the Birth and Women?s Health Center in Tucson, Arizona, researchers asked 100 pregnant women to predict whether they would give birth to a girl or a boy.? Women who claimed to have an intuition about the gender of their child made the right choice over 70 percent of the time.

?One of the interesting findings to come out of this study,? explains the researcher, ?is that women who have a preference for one gender or the other don?t tend to have accurate intuitions.? The point is that there?s a big difference between what you want to happen and what your intuition tells you is going to happen.? When a woman really wants either a girl or a boy, her desire gets in the way of her intuitive ability.?

I think this can also relate, to what we want or hope our children will accomplish.? As mothers we naturally want the best for our children in every way.? We have many hopes and expectations for them to live up to.? Sometimes we compare our children to others children.? For many it starts early on-when will they start crawling?? So-and-so?s baby is already crawling and mine can?t even sit up yet and they are the same age.? When is my child going to read books with more substance?? So- and-so?s child is in preschool reading Pride and Prejudice and my 4th grader is reading Horrible Harry.

Of course these are silly situations but on some level I think we have all experienced these feelings.? However, we need to make sure that first, we never compare our children to others as they are so vastly different.? Second, what we want for our children and what is most important for them to accomplish should be guided by the spirit.

I read an article recently of a girl who graduated from NYU.? Her mother pushed for her to get into the best college she could, no matter the cost, and she thought they could figure out the money part later.? Now, her daughter has $100,000 in tuition and school debt and no way to pay it back and no end in sight.? If we are so focused on what we want for our children and go our own path we will miss important promptings and guidance from the spirit on what Heavenly Father wants for his children.

-God?s Children-

I had an experience recently that made me realize?although these are my children on earth and I cling to them as all my own, they are Heavenly Father?s children of whom I have stewardship over on this earth.? He has entrusted me-us as parents as mothers to rear his children, to teach them of him, of Christ, of Prayer, that they may remember him and have the desire to return to him.

Many feel afraid or nervous to have children in these latter days.? There is so much wickedness and obstacles for them to overcome.? But they need to come, to gain a body, and fulfill Gods? plan for them.

It is clear from birth, children of today are naturally strong-willed, smart, eager to learn, and determined.? If they are given no guidance they will most likely be overtaken and fall from the wickedness we see around us.? But as women of today we have been set aside to raise the next generation just as they have been set aside to some to earth in these days.? And if we teach them by the sprit, nurture them, and watch over them, they will be mighty and they will be able to conquer all of the trials that come down their path and return with honor to their Heavenly Father.

I have heard our prophets and apostles many times speak about their experiences of childhood and their mother?s example.? From making plates of food for every widower in the ward, to teaching the importance of reverence and respect in our prayers to our Father in Heaven, what wonderful examples these women are to us in showing that diligence in teaching their children important values and principles, most times by example, can help these children come to do great things.

-Am I living how I want to teach my children?-

Elder M. Russell Ballard said, ?There is no one perfect way to be a good mother.? Each situation is unique.? Each mother has different challenges, different skills and abilities, and certainly different children.? The choice is different and unique for each mother and each family? What matters is that a mother loves her children deeply and, in keeping with the devotion she has for God and her husband, prioritizes them above all else.?

Family A Proclamation to the World-?Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, to teach them to love and serve on another, to observe the commandments of God and to be law-abiding citizens wherever they live?.by divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families.? Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children.?? In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners.?

Although we as mothers were born to fulfill this duty, it does not mean we are always going to know what to do in every situation, or always make the right decisions, or have all the answers.? Sometimes we will make mistakes, our children will make mistakes.?? But when we fall we get back up again and tell ourselves I will do better.? I will keep trying. Through prayer and scripture study we will never be alone and we can always find the answers if we ask and search diligently.

I quote Elder Jeffrey R Holland: Like the woman who anonymously, meekly, perhaps even with hesitation and some embarrassment, fought her way through the crowd just to touch the hem of the Master?s garment, so Christ will say to the women who worry and wonder and sometimes weep over their responsibility as mothers, ?Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith had made thee whole.?? And it will make your children whole as well.

Jacob 5:54 And, behold, the roots of the natural branches of the tree which I planted whithersoever I would are yet alive; wherefore, that I may preserve them also for mine own purpose, I will take of the branches of this tree, and I will graft them in unto them.? Yea, I will graft in unto them the branches of their mother tree, that I may preserve the roots also unto mine own self, that when they shall be sufficiently strong perhaps they may bring forth good fruit unto me, and I may yet have glory in the fruit of my vineyard.

The Lord did not graft into the natural branches, branches from a father tree, or a babysitter tree, or a government tree, he grafted unto them the branches of their mother tree that they may bring forth good fruit unto Him.

Elder L. Tome Perry said, ?Parents must bring light and truth into their homes by one family prayer, one scripture study session, one family home evening, one book read aloud, one song, and one family meal at a time.? They know that the influence of righteous, conscientious, persistant, daily parenting is among the most powerful and sustain forces for good in the world.? The health of any society, the happiness of its people, their prosperity, and their peace all find common roots in the teaching of children in the home.?

I testify that motherhood is a divinely designed role.? It is a great challenge, I know we will have to overcome many obstacles, but it is also a great blessing and service to our children and Father in Heaven.? I am grateful for my mother and her example to me, for teaching me the gospel and how to make right choices.? I know that if we follow the good examples of our mothers and if we live our lives in a way that will help the spirit to dwell with us always, our children will be greatly blessed.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio officials are preparing to impose new rules on owners of exotic animals without knowing exactly how many lions, leopards, bears and other creatures live in the state.

That's because until Ohio's governor signs the new regulations - expected soon - the state has among the nation's weakest restrictions on exotic pets.

The state Legislature cleared a bill last week to immediately ban people from buying new dangerous animals. Once in effect, owners would have 60 days to register their creatures with the state.

The state's veterinarian says Ohio is dealing with the unknown, and it'll take time to find out how many animals are out there.

Efforts to regulate dangerous wildlife took on new urgency in October, when a suicidal owner released dozens of exotic animals.

Screen Your Online University by Accreditation

May 29th, 2012

More and more students are discovering the benefits and flexibility of attending an online university. Since it has been widely used, there are entities taking advantage of this and create scams to victimize unwary students. To avoid this, it is always important to investigate prospective colleges and check whether they are legitimate by looking for their accreditation.

Accreditation is the bread and butter of all online universities. It is awarded by governing institutions like Department of Education. Accreditation is more of a bragging right of an online college so it is usually at their homepage. If not, look for any contact information of the college and ask for a copy of their accreditation. It is also important to know that accreditation expires every 5 years and has to be renewed for a college to continue operating. The reason behind this is you do not want to have a fake diploma which would not be recognized anywhere.

Creating an Ancestor List ("Ahnentafel") in Legacy Family Tree 7.5

In response to my Saturday Night Genealogy Fun post, I received an email question from a reader who asked "How do I make an Ahnentafel using my genealogy software?" ?It struck me that perhaps some readers do not know what an "ahnentafel" is...so I'll show how my three genealogy software programs create one.

Each program does this differently, with somewhat different results, so I'll go through Legacy Family Tree 7.5, Family Tree Maker 2012 and RootsMagic 5 in a series of posts.

Note that I like to use the term "Ancestor List" rather than "Ahnentafel" for this list, since it is really not a "Name Table." ?For this "Ancestor List," I want ONLY the ancestor name, birth date and place, death date and place, and marriage date and place. ?For me, a printed "Ancestor List" is much easier to use than a series of linked and printed pedigree charts.

1) ?In Legacy Family Tree 7.5, with myself highlighted on the Legacy Family View, I clicked on the "Reports" button in the Menu icon row:

2) ?In the screen above, the "Books and Other" window opened, and I want to select the "Ancestors" button from the menu in order to make my Ancestor List. ?That opens the "Ancestor Book" window:
There are five tabs (Options, Page Layout, Heading Layout, Wording 1 and Wording 2) and three buttons at the bottom of the window (Index Options, Report Options and Title Page). ?The Options tab is shown above.

On the Options tab, I made the number of Generations = 12. ?I unchecked everything else for this "Ancestor List" report.

3) ?I clicked the "Index Options" button and unchecked every box in the two tabs (Name Index), Location Index):

I clicked "OK" and was back to the "Ancestor Book" window.

4) ?I clicked on the "Report Options" button and there are eight tabs (Include, format, Privacy, Sources, Pictures, Page Setup, Header/Footer, and Fonts). ? I went through each of them and unchecked every box.

On the "Include" tab, I checked the "Marriage Information" box:

Note that I left the "Child-parent relationships" and "Children of each spouse" boxes unchecked since I don't want a list of the children of each ancestral family. ?I also left "Print source citations" unchecked for this list.

On the "Format" tab, I checked the "Don't include duplicate lines."

5) ?I clicked on the "close" button for the "Report Options" window and was back to the "Ancestor Book" window. ?I clicked on the "Preview" button (upper right-hand corner) and a 120 page Ancestor List was created. ?Here is page 1:

And page 2 (which starts the actual Ancestor List):
Based on the parameters I set, I received the names, parents names, birth dates/places, death dates/places and marriage dates/places for each of my ancestors in the 12 generations requested.

7) ?When I first tried this, I left the "Don't include duplicate lines" box on the "Format" tab of the "Report Options" window unchecked. ?I received an error message after 11 pages, and received a message that an individual had been processed 3 times" and that "You might be in an endless loop:"

I clicked on "Continue processing" and received several more of these messages, and finally cancelled the report. ?Later, I went back and increased the number of allowable duplicates to 5, and a 124 page report was created. ?I have several duplicate lines back in the 17th century.

Some format things that I noted about the "Ancestor List" Report:

* ?The Cover Page is really for a book - I would like to have the option to eliminate it (perhaps I couldn't find that option?).

* ?The months are three-letter abbreviations rather than the full spelling.

* ?The marriage line is included for both spouses in a marriage.

* ?The burial date and place is included in the list.

* ?The names are in Pedigree chart order, and skip the missing ancestors.

* ?The Parents names of each person are included on the list (I saw no way to not include them).

All in all, Legacy Family Tree makes a very nice Ancestor List, although it is not exactly what I wanted (the additions are the burial data, Parent's names and one marriage line). ?The user can save the list as an HTML, RTF or PDF file to their computer, or can Print the whole file or a range of pages using the radio buttons on the "Ancestor Book" window or on the "Preview" page.
