"I'm a millionaire now, but I'll still eat at McDonald's," Lawson told a news conference in the Michigan capital of Lansing. "I don't like filet mignon or lobster."
Lawson, who said he had played the lottery "too much" in the past, quit his job the day he learned that he was the winner. And he told all of his close family members to retire, "and they had no problem with that."
He chose to take his money all at once rather than to take annual payments that would have added up to $337 million. Instead he will get a payout of $224.6 million, which will be $158.7 million after federal and Michigan taxes.
Lawson lives in Lapeer, Michigan, about 60 miles north of Detroit, where he bought his winning lottery ticket for $2 at a Sunoco gas station and convenience store.
He said he filled out his own lottery entry rather than let a machine make his picks, and used no system to select his winning numbers - 6, 27, 46, 51 and 56, with a Powerball of 21.
"I didn't really pick 'em," he said. "My hand just went."
He said he checked his numbers by looking online once someone told him that the winning ticket had been purchased at the local Sunoco station.
Lawson said he read the numbers backward and once he realized he was holding the single winning ticket, "I kind of lost my breath."
Lawson grew up in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and moved to Lapeer 10 years ago. He is going to move away from Lapeer, but he did not say where, although he did say he has always wanted to travel.
"Now I can go anywhere in the world I want, so that's what I'm going to do," he said.
His mother, whose name was not given, was asked whether she thought her son would handle his new fortune well.
"We come from poor people," she said. "He knows the value of a dollar."

Under the hood, the x2 runs an Atom-based Clover Trail processor. Though HP isn't ready to talk battery life, we've noticed that every other OEM releasing a Clover Trail device is promising between nine and 10 hours of runtime, so we expect the x2 to deliver comparable performance. What's more, the dock has a built-in battery of its own, so you'll definitely have some reserve power there. Danish researchers at University of Copenhagen lead the way for future monitoring of marine biodiversity and resources by using DNA traces in seawater samples to keep track of fish and whales in the oceans. A half litre of seawater can contain evidence of local fish and whale faunas and combat traditional fishing methods. Their results are now published in the international scientific journal PLOS ONE.
"The new DNA-method means that we can keep better track of life beneath the surface of the oceans around the world, and better monitor and protect ocean biodiversity and resources," says PhD student Philip Francis Thomsen from the Centre for GeoGenetics, Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen.
Marine ecosystems worldwide are under threat with many fish species and populations suffering from human over-exploitation, which greatly impacts global biodiversity, economy and human health. Today, marine fish are largely surveyed using selective and invasive methods mostly limited to commercial species, and restricted to areas with favourable conditions.
However, researchers at Centre for GeoGenetics now lead the way for future monitoring of marine biodiversity. They have shown that seawater contains DNA from animals such as fish and whales. The species leave behind a trace of DNA that reveals their presence in the ocean based on water samples of just half a litre.
From freshwater to seawater
The development of the novel DNA monitoring approach was accomplished by PhD student Philip Francis Thomsen and Master's student Jos Kielgast from the Centre for GeoGenetics headed by Professor Eske Willerslev. In December last year, they showed that small freshwater samples contain DNA from several different threatened animals, and after having published these results they began to focus on seawater. Here it also proved possible to obtain DNA directly from the water, which originated from local species living in the area.
"We analysed seawater samples specifically for fish DNA and we were very surprised when the results started to show up on the screen. We ended up with DNA from 15 different fish species in water samples of just a half litre. We found DNA from both small and large fish, as well as both common species and rare guests. Cod, herring, eel, plaice, pilchard and many more have all left a DNA trace in the seawater," says Philip Francis Thomsen.
In the other study the researchers showed that it is also possible to obtain DNA from harbour porpoise in small water samples taken in the sea, so the approach is not only limited to fish, but can also track large marine mammals.
A new and efficient method
The study also compares the new DNA method with existing methods traditionally used for monitoring fish such as trawl and pots. Here, the DNA method proved as good as or mostly better than existing methods. Moreover, the DNA method has a big advantage that it can be performed virtually anywhere without impacting the local habitat -- it just requires a sample of water. Associate Professor and fish expert Peter Rask M?ller from the National History Museum of Denmark, who also participated in the study, is optimistic.
"The new DNA method has very interesting perspectives for monitoring marine fish. We always keep our eyes open for new methods to describe marine fish biodiversity in an efficient and standardised way. Here, I look very much forward to follow the DNA method in the future, and I think it could be very useful to employ in oceans around the world," says Peter Rask M?ller.
The researchers also see great perspectives in the method for estimating fish stocks in the future.

The world's third-biggest seaport operator said pre-tax profit rose to $310 million for the six-month period ending June 30, compared with $306 million for the same period last year. Revenue rose 1.8 percent to $1.529 billion for the period, compared with $1.502 billion for the first half of 2011.
Earlier this month, it reported a 7.5 percent rise in gross container volumes for the first half of 2012, led by traffic in the Asia-Pacific region. DP World officials have declined to comment on reports from Yemen that authorities canceled its contract at Aden port.
DP World is part of Dubai's troubled Dubai World conglomerate, but it was excluded from its parent's massive debt restructuring.

I?d started feeling really sluggish recently when I tried to eat more meat too quickly. I started to read into raw foods and I was massively intrigued by their recipes.
