Palestinian: US supports 'an apartheid system'

BETHLEHEM, WEST BANK ? At the Aida Refugee Camp, a few blocks from Israel?s separation wall, is the Al Rowwad Cultural and Theater Center founded by Dr. Abdelfattah Abusrour in 1998 with the philosophy of ?beautiful resistance? against the Israeli power over their land.

Abusrour is part of the first generation of children born to refugee parents in the Aida Refugee Camp, which was established in 1950 between the towns of Bethlehem and Beit Jala. It is now home to around 5,000 inhabitants all descendants from the 1948 expulsion from Palestine.

Abusrour considers himself ?fortunate? to have gotten a scholarship to study in France, where he stayed for nine years and got his master?s and Ph.D in biological and medical engineering. But his heart was always also with theater, painting and photography. He came home with the dream of working with children to help shape the future of a Palestinian state.

The center started working with children in refugee camps in the area of Bethlehem and Bet-Jala, but then spread all over the West Bank with mobile ?beautiful resistance? programs in theater, dance and music training.

He explained the center?s philosophy: ?Resistance, because we are under occupation still until today and we have this right to resist the occupation; and beautiful, to reflect all this beauty, this humanity, this culture, this heritage, this beautiful heritage of unarmed struggle that the Palestinians have carried over the years even before Gandhi and Martin Luther King.?

?

?

?

U.S. is ?supportive of an apartheid system that is suffocating us?

The center takes some of the children to tour and perform internationally.

?We go internationally to give the children the possibility to see real, free and peaceful countries without checkpoints, without tear gas, without occupation soldiers,? said Abusrour.

Children have toured in the United States, among many other countries.?

Abusrour says he was very eager to tour with the children in the U.S. because it is the richest, most powerful democracy in the world. But he also wanted to show them that even in the biggest democracy, injustice can be found.?

NBC News speaks with citizens from around the globe, asking the question, 'What Does America Mean to You?'

?We took our children to poor areas like Afro-American neighborhoods because it was important for me to show them as Palestinians that there are equal injustices in other places of the world,? he said.

While he appreciates the power of the U.S., Abusrour believes that as a country, it is not living up to its ideals. ?

?The United States of America is a country like any other country. It has its beauty and faults," said Abusrour. He added that it is "the land of free and the brave, apparently, and they are violating the values that they pretend defending.?

For many Palestinians, it is hard to ignore the long-term support the U.S. has given and continues to give Israel for its security. ?Many find it hard to understand how a country like the U.S., which plays a leading role in shaping the policies of other countries, can help Israel?s continuous violation of the Palestinian?s rights.

?As a Palestinian I see that [the U.S.] is supportive of an apartheid system that is suffocating us, that is continuing a violation of human rights and human values that we share as Palestinians,? said Abusrour. ?I see the governments of the United States of America, one after the other, supporting this illegal occupation.??

(AP) ? The Supreme Court's decision Thursday to uphold President Barack Obama's historic overhaul is expected to be a boon to most of the health care industry by making coverage more affordable for millions of uninsured Americans.

The ruling could give the biggest boost to hospitals and health insurers, but drugmakers and biotech companies also will get additional customers because the law requires nearly everyone to have health insurance by 2014 or pay a fine. That's expected to bring coverage to about 30 million more Americans.

But medical device makers will be hit with a tax on sales as a result of the law, and experts disagree on whether those companies will see much of a jump in business in a couple years.

Overall, the ruling could boost health care stocks both by increasing access to and use of health care and by ending months of uncertainty and speculation. Shares jumped on Thursday for hospitals, but fell slightly for drug makers and most insurers.

Here's the potential impact to each major sector in the health care industry:

DRUGMAKERS

The ruling's effect on drugmaker stocks was muted Thursday.

Les Funtleyder, health care fund manager at Poliwogg, a private equity fund for small investors, said that's because the ruling keeps the status quo for those companies.

He noted the law ? which the industry strongly supported ? didn't carry significant reductions in what government programs pay for medicines. That's a big positive given that drug prices are much higher in the U.S. than other countries and are a perennial target of industry critics and anyone looking for places to cut medical costs.

Biotech and traditional drugmakers likewise already are absorbing the negative parts of the health care law: fees based on their share of the prescription drug market, discounts to seniors on Medicare who have hit the "doughnut hole" coverage gap and much-higher rebates to the government on drugs bought through Medicaid.

All those costs from the overhaul are reflected in drugmakers' share prices and financial forecasts, said UBS drug analyst Matthew Roden.

He said the companies likely will get a boost in drug revenue from new patients starting in 2014, but not a huge one. That's because patients needing the most expensive drugs, for cancer and rare disorders, aren't going without now ? generally are getting them through government or industry patient assistance programs.

Roden thinks investors who shifted into safe-haven stocks such as pharmaceuticals recently on Thursday decided to jump over to hospitals, which appear to have fared best under the ruling.

HOSPITALS

Hospitals perhaps could have the most to gain from the law.

"Hospitals may be the biggest beneficiary because their biggest problem is people without insurance," said analyst Les Funtleyder, health care fund manager at Poliwogg, a private equity fund for small investors.

Indeed, the 30 million or more people expected to gain health insurance in 2014 will reduce the number of uninsured patients showing up at hospitals needing urgent care, often for conditions that could have been treated much more cheaply early on.

Such charity care has been a big drag on hospitals, and those costs should drop sharply. Federal payments to hospitals to offset some charity care costs will be reduced as more people are insured, said UBS health care services analyst A.J. Rice.

More importantly, he expects those newly insured folks to seek more tests and nonemergency treatments at hospitals, including for chronic health conditions such as diabetes, boosting hospital patient volume. But there are tradeoffs, as hospitals will get smaller annual increases in Medicare payment rates.

"There's a lot of variables to be worked out," Rice said, but "the net effect should be positive" for hospitals.

INSURERS

Insurers will get millions of new customers thanks to tax credits that will help middle class people pay for coverage on the individual market, and the state-federal Medicaid program will still expand. Additionally, the requirement that nearly every American have insurance will compel more people to buy coverage.

But insurers will also face hefty fees and restrictions because of the law. The health insurance sector will pay annual fees starting in 2014. They total $8 billion that first year and then climb in subsequent years.

The law also restricts how much insurers can vary their pricing based on things like age and it will require them to cover everyone who applies starting in 2014. The law also requires insurers to spend a minimum percentage of the premiums they collect on care and quality improvements or pay rebates to some of its customers.

Citi analyst Carl McDonald said insurers also face considerable risks that they will get mostly sick people signing up for coverage in the online health insurance exchanges that begin in a couple years. The exchanges are like online marketplaces where people can shop for coverage much like they do for airline tickets on travel web sites.

He noted the mandate that requires people to purchase coverage will lead to only a $95 tax penalty at least initially. The analyst said that won't be strong enough to persuade young healthy people to sign up for coverage.

The overhaul requires insurers to cover all who apply for insurance starting in 2014, which means they won't be able to deny coverage to someone with a pre-existing condition like diabetes. Insurers have said that for this to happen, they will need a balance of healthy customers to counter people who produce more in claims than they pay in premiums.

MEDICAL DEVICE MAKERS

For medical device makers, the bad news is that the tax on devices stays. Medical device makers will have to start paying a 2.3 percent tax beginning in January on their sales of devices such as pacemakers and CT scan machines imposed under the overhaul law. But they could more customers.

Funtleyder, the health care fund manager, said it was all negative, because he doesn't foresee a big jump in device sales resulting from the ruling: "People who need a pacemaker already were getting one."

But Leerink Swann analyst Richard Newitter wrote that he expects more doctor visits and hospital procedures to increase sales of devices.

One trade group for the industry, the Medical Device Manufacturers Association, said that Congress and the president must repeal the tax, arguing it would make it harder for companies to develop innovative new devices.

"It is clear that this misguided policy has already led to job losses and cuts to research and development," Mark Leahey, the group's president, said in a statement.

MMA shirt at the center of assault trial

A shirt "popular with MMA fans" set off a fight in Illinois that left a man blind and paralyzed. No, for real.

Anna Minette, a friend of the victim Eric Bartels, pointed out a spot on the shirt of Joe Messina, the man charged with assault. Messina responded it was just blood, and here's where it got ugly.

Minette testified that she and Bartels both thought "that's odd" and Bartels told Messina "he should take care of that."

The comment sent Messina into a rage, she testified. "He kind of just (started) yelling," she said. "'It's going to be your blood.'"

Bartels and Minette were moving away when she heard "a loud crack" behind her and turned to see Bartels sprawled out on the pavement, with "blood pooling around his head," she testified.

Bartels survived the attack but is now blind and paralyzed.

Cagewriter has made many, many jokes about MMA apparel. Some of the shirts are truly appalling, but never a reason for violence.

Scientists are reporting an advance toward treating disease with minute capsules containing not drugs but the DNA and other biological machinery for making the drug. In an article in ACS' journal Nano Letters, they describe engineering micro- and nano-sized capsules that contain the genetically coded instructions, plus the read-out gear and assembly line for protein synthesis that can be switched on with an external signal.

Daniel Anderson and colleagues explain that development of nanoscale production units for protein-based drugs in the human body may provide a new approach for treating disease. These production units could be turned on when needed, producing medicines that cannot be taken orally or are toxic and would harm other parts of the body. Until now, researchers have only done this with live bacteria that were designed to make proteins at disease sites. But unlike bacterial systems, artificial ones are modular, and it is easier to modify them. That's why Anderson's group developed an artificial, remotely activated nanoparticle system containing DNA and the other "parts" necessary to make proteins, which are the workhorses of the human cell and are often used as drugs.

They describe the nanoscale production units, which are tiny spheres encapsulating protein-making machinery like that found in living cells. The resulting nanoparticles produced active proteins on demand when the researchers shined a laser light on them. The nanoparticles even worked when they were injected into mice, which are stand-ins for humans in the laboratory, producing proteins when a laser was shone onto the animals. This innovation "may find utility in the localized delivery of therapeutics," say the researchers.

Mitt Romney Promises Economy 'Resurgence' If Elected President

WOODBRIDGE, N.J. -- If Mitt Romney gets elected president, you can be sure this promise of his will be revisited.

The former Massachusetts governor and presumptive Republican nominee told supporters here at a Tuesday evening fundraiser that under President Romney, the U.S. economy will make a dramatic turnaround.

"If I become president, you're going to see an economic resurgence: manufacturing resurgence, high-tech, health care. You're going to see this economy take off," Romney said. "And I say that because I know what I'm going to do, and I know what kind of impact it will have."

President Barack Obama's campaign has made one of its core thrusts of late to charge that Romney has not revealed details of what he would do if elected on topics that include closing tax loopholes, upholding or repealing Obama's recent quasi-executive order halting deportation of undocumented immigrant children.

But Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul responded to those critics in an email Tuesday.

"The focus of this campaign is getting the economy back on track and we?ve released a 160-page guide for how Gov. Romney would do just that," Saul wrote. "We are still waiting for a single plan or new idea from President Obama that would help the economy."

Romney, at a fundraiser attended by more than 200 supporters in a hotel ballroom (contributors gave $2,500 for admission, $10,000 for a photo with Romney, $25,000 for a VIP reception, and $50,000 for a private dinner), continued to hammer Obama for focusing on health care early in his presidency instead of on turning the economy around.

"This is a tough time, and it didn't have to be this way," Romney said.

He said that if Obama had followed "the first three rules of any enterprise in trouble, whether government, a charity, a family, anything," he could have avoided such a prolonged economic downturn and slow recovery.

"There are three rules that we used to follow in my prior business career, in a turnaround: focus, focus and focus. Focus on the most important thing with all of your energy and passion. And this president came into office and there was one issue that was on everyone's mind: the economy," Romney said. "He turned and focused on entirely different things."

Earlier in the day, the Republican National Committee sent out a memo detailing passages from a recent book on the president's first term that described Obama as setting the economy on the back burner and choosing to pursue a more historic accomplishment than economic stabilization.

It is GOP's the prelude to the Supreme Court's ruling that is expected to be delivered on Thursday morning on Obama's health care law. Romney hit the same theme as the RNC memo.

"They focused on Obamacare, spent two, three years fighting to put in place their idea of a liberal vision for health care. And now the Supreme Court's about to take a look at it. If the Supreme Court lets it stand, well it will make it very clear to the American people they must elect someone who will stop it," Romney said. "If they overturn it, and they say it's unconstitutional as I believe it is, then the first 3.5 years of the Obama administration have been entirely wasted."

Romney also took a shot at Obama for the president's joke to supporters in Massachusetts on Monday about the Boston Red Sox trade of player Kevin Youkilis to the president's hometown team, the Chicago White Sox, which drew some boos from the crowd.

"You saw that President Obama came up to Massachusetts, shows he doesn't really understand the audience terribly well," Romney said. "He went up there and criticized the Boston Red Sox. You know, you don't talk about Kevin Youkilis in a negative tone or you might get yourself booed by your own constituency."

White House press secretary Jay Carney protested to reporters on Tuesday, aboard Air Force One, that most of the boos from the audience were actually chants of Youkilis' name.

"Anyone who knows Boston and knows the Red Sox, and who was in that room, knows that the preponderance of people shouting in response to what the president said about Kevin Youkilis were saying 'Youk,' not 'Booo' for God?s sake," Carney said.

Romney was introduced at the fundraiser by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who said Obama has "made America a more pessimistic place" and mocked the president's campaign slogan.

"He doesn't have a coherent message about America's future. All he says on the little sign on the front of his podium is, 'Forward,'" Christie said. "No, what this is is backward."

Christie, considered to be a possible vice presidential pick for Romney, said he is "ready to do whatever he needs me to do to make sure that on January 20 of 2013 a new day starts for America."

Romney joked with the crowd that he was "hoping somebody in here would start to heckle [Christie], so I could watch him go to town.

"Yeah, but you know better don't ya?" Romney joked, to much laughter.

Christie's brother, Todd, made brief remarks earlier, and said the fundraiser was going to "go way over" the $1.6 million that New Jersey Republicans raised for Romney at a December fundraiser. The Romney campaign did not disclose how much it planned to raise Tuesday night.

Activists: Syrian rebels clash with elite troops

(AP) ? Activists are reporting heavy clashes between Syrian rebels and the elite Republican Guard in two suburbs of the capital Damascus.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the clashes erupted on Tuesday in the suburbs of Qudsaya and Hammah. It says that several people have been reported killed but gave no figures.

The Republican Guard's main job is to protect the capital, the seat of President Bashar Assad's power. Although Damascus is under the firm control of Assad's forces, clashes erupt regularly in the suburbs between troops and rebels.

Tuesday's clashes were reported near the housing compounds and bases of the Republican Guard.

Romney: States have right to secure their borders

(AP) ? Mitt Romney on Monday said states have a duty and a right to secure their borders even as he called for a bipartisan national immigration strategy.

The likely Republican nominee did not address the merits of the Supreme Court's decision to strike down key parts of Arizona's tough immigration enforcement law. But he used it as an opportunity to criticize President Barack Obama for inaction on immigration reform until recently.

"This represents yet another broken promise by this president. I believe that each state has the duty ? and the right ? to secure our borders and preserve the rule of law, particularly when the federal government has failed to meet its responsibilities," Romney said in a written statement released before he left Salt Lake City to fly to a planned fundraiser in Arizona.

Romney has worked to soften his rhetoric on immigration policy since becoming the presumptive Republican nominee for president. During the Republican primary, Romney called Arizona's law a "model" ? though he never explicitly endorsed the law.

The Obama administration sued to block the Arizona law soon after its enactment two years ago. During the primary, Romney said he would have ended the lawsuit against Arizona if elected president.

The Monday Supreme Court decision upholds Arizona's "show me your papers" requirement for the moment. But it takes the teeth out of it by prohibiting police officers from arresting people on minor immigration charges.

The court struck down these three major provisions: requiring all immigrants to obtain or carry immigration registration papers; making it a state criminal offense for an illegal immigrant to seek work or hold a job; and allowing police to arrest suspected illegal immigrants without warrants.

Check out your local library: It's not just for books anymore

The public library is one of the best ?free? resources in many communities, and a personal favorite of our personal finance expert. From yes, the books, to films to Internet portals and teen resources, libraries have something for everyone.

(It?s worth noting that libraries aren?t truly free. While you don?t have to pay any money immediately to use the resources, libraries are usually funded by a mix of taxpayer dollars, grants, and donations. However, the value that most people get out of the library, if they choose to use it, far exceeds what goes into the library.)

A good library isn?t some unique resource that you?ll just find in certain towns. Most towns have a library, even small ones like the one depicted below.

What value can you get out of your local library? I?m going to reiterate some of the items mentioned in my ?tour? post above, along with some other value that libraries contribute.

Books Yes, libraries are a warehouse of books that you can check out for free. You can also find magazines, newspapers, tax documents, and other such printed material at the library, too. Beyond that, most librarians are quite happy to share their expertise in helping you find the right book for your needs and interests.

Music Most libraries have a collection of CDs that you can check out for your own enjoyment. Larger libraries even have musical discovery programs to help introduce you to new kinds of music that you may never have known about before.

Films Many libraries have DVDs that you can check out. Some libraries carry this further and show films at the library. Larger libraries even have a small auditorium which goes a long way toward creating a theater-like experience for free.

Cultural events Libraries often host muscial groups, speakers, and presenters of all kinds for the public to enjoy. At my own library, I?ve heard authors speak and bands perform. I?ve seen jugglers juggle and movie directors present their work.

Audiobooks Going on a trip? Your library likely has a good collection of audiobooks to check out that will make your travel a lot more enjoyable.

Meeting places Many libraries have rooms that can be used for meetings of community groups. I?ve participated in gaming groups and book clubs at libraries, and I?ve seen everything from gardening clubs to jester training (yes, jester training) at libraries.

Children?s resources Libraries often have abundant children?s resources. For example, right now my children are involved in a robust reading program that rewards them for summer reading with new books and other items, plus there?s a weekly storytime and other activities at the library for them.

Internet access Almost every library today offers computer use with internet access for those who do not have access to the internet at home. Many libraries offer wi-fi access for people who bring in their laptops and other devices.

Teen resources Many larger libraries offer teen programs, including rooms where teens can hang out together in a safe yet private environment. They also offer book clubs targeting teenagers.

Additional community resources Some libraries offer additional services beyond these. For example, some local libraries offer battery recycling. One local library near us offers free paper recycling for people who don?t have home pick-up.

Your local library has a wealth of resources right there for you to take advantage of. All you have to do is walk in the door.

Two feet of rain, thousands flee Debby floods

River flooding form Tropical Storm Debby on Tuesday forced up to 20,000 people out of their homes in one Florida county alone, while another area had already seen more than 26 inches of rain -- topping the official forecast calling for up to 25 inches in a few areas by the time Debby moves out Thursday.

In Pasco County on Florida's central Gulf Coast, a mandatory evacuation was ordered between the Anclote and Pithlachascotee rivers, Reuters reported. The Anclote rose from 9 feet before Debby's approach to more than 27 feet on Tuesday, flooding areas with water head-high in places.

Boats were used to reach stranded residents, and 106 homes had been damaged.

Wakulla County, meanwhile, has seen more than 26 inches of rain, weather.com said in a Twitter alert Tuesday morning. Authorities there advised people to stay in their homes due to washed out and flooded roads.

Flash flood warnings were issued for parts of northern Florida and southern Georgia as Debby moved eastward. By midday, Debby picked up speed to 6 mph and winds had dropped to 40 mph, but that didn't stop the rain.

Parts of Interstate 10 in north Florida were closed due to flooding on a 50-mile stretch between Jacksonville and Tallahassee. The Florida Highway Patrol warned motorists to use extreme caution on other parts of the highway.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been impacted, many having to leave flooded homes in Florida's Panhandle on Monday and others losing power or having property hit by twisters.

Video: TODAY tracks Debby's path

In Tampa Bay, a mother manatee was found dead in the water Tuesday off Bayshore Boulevard. Her two calves, which were still alive and later rescued, washed ashore along the flooded road.

Tropical-storm warnings remained in effect for 450 miles of coastline from the Panhandle's Mexico Beach to Englewood, south of Sarasota. Debby is expected to make landfall on Wednesday in an even weaker state but still dumping rain.

On Monday, Florida Gov. Rick Scott declared a statewide emergency as five inches of rain in the course of an hour fell on some areas.

President Barack Obama called Scott on Tuesday and the federal government stands "ready to provide additional assistance if necessary," the White House said.

St. Marks, Fla., saw 21 inches in a two-day period while other areas got around 20 inches, weather.com noted.

Parts of Live Oak, Fla., were evacuated Tuesday due to flooding, it added.

Some areas of northern Florida and southeast Georgia could see up to 15 inches of rain Tuesday through Thursday, weather.com stated.

The National Hurricane Center predicted parts of northern Florida could see 25 inches of rain by the time Debby crosses Florida and exits into the Atlantic.

Weather.com noted that 2012 broke the record for the most named storms so early in the Atlantic season. Debby makes four so far, "leapfrogging Dennis from July 5, 2005.

"In an average year, the fourth named storm would have occurred by August 23," it added. "In terms of named storm counts, we're roughly two months ahead of the pace. That said, there is no correlation between a fast start to the season and the degree of activity of the rest of the season."

Debby was also the first tropical storm of the season to enter the Gulf of Mexico.

Debby earlier left tens of thousands of people without power and forced the closure of key highways and bridges in the Tampa Bay area.

Debby has also spawned some 20 twisters, including one on Sunday that killed a woman, injured her daughter and tore through homes in central Florida's rural Highlands County.

WFLA-TV reported Heather Town died when her home was lifted off its foundation and she and her 3-year-old were thrown into nearby woods. The mother was found clutching the child, who survived.

In Starke, Fla., five dogs drowned early Monday when a swollen creek flooded an animal shelter, The Florida Times-Union reported.

Pinellas County saw flooding and at least 20 homes damaged during a tornado-like storm on Sunday.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.
