Q&A: Sticking With Windows 7 - NYTimes.com

Q.

With Windows 8 here, how long will Microsoft still sell Windows 7?

A.

Microsoft?s latest edition of the Windows operating system has just landed, but Windows 7 is not going anywhere soon. As explained on Microsoft?s site, copies of Windows 7 will be available for retail purchase for another year, and PC manufacturers then have an additional year to keep selling Windows 7 installed on new computers.

The company has long-term technical support plans for Windows 7 too. According to the Microsoft Support Lifecycle page for Windows 7, mainstream support lasts through Jan. 13, 2015, and provides paid and free support, warranty claims, security patches and feature updates. Extended support, which includes feature updates and warranty claims, continues through Jan. 14, 2020.

Microsoft does allow plenty of transition time to new systems. Extended support for Windows XP, which arrived in 2001, is scheduled to finally end in April 2014.

Caring For Baby Boomers and Seniors In Their Own Homes

With proper health care, you as a baby boomer or senior could live to be 100 years if age, or older. You can also be instrumental in helping other baby boomers or seniors to live to be a ripe old age in their own homes.

Senior care is becoming a major concern in North America, particularly because there are thousands of seniors and baby boomers in our era. By seniors, I am referring to those over the age of sixty five and by baby boomers, those people who were born after World War 11. It is only a matter of time, before they are seniors too.

The big problem for seniors and baby boomers, lies in the reality that very soon, there are not going to be enough nurses, personal support workers or even family members to care for them, or perhaps for you, if you are a baby boomer heading into retirement.

Hospitalization or nursing home care may not be feasible or possible for the majority of baby boomers and seniors, in spite of the fact that it will be needed by many of them. For many,? it may mean twenty four hour care, seven days per week.

The actual cost of hospitalization and health care is extremely high already and many baby boomers and seniors may not be able to afford the kind of care that they will need.

What can we do to rectify this situation? Everyone of us has baby boomers and seniors in our lives; many of us are in baby boomer status already or beyond that age.

Can baby boomers and seniors be cared for in their own homes? Definitely.

Ten tips for managing baby boomer or senior care at home:

1. Baby boomers and seniors are generally most comfortable in their own homes with their family members and in amongst their own belongings. To take them out of that environment may result in dis-orientation. They are accustomed to the food, temperature, air, etc. and changing any or all of that may result in other, more serious problems. They are used to having people come and go in their lives, as well. This is the world that they know.

2. Safety is a major concern and the majority of baby boomers and seniors feel safe at home. In fact, most of them have already instituted safety precautions for themselves, although this is not always the case. One of the first things that must be taken into consideration is whether or not the baby boomer or senior is safe. If he or she is not safe in the environment, immediate action is necessary on the part of the family or designated care giver.

3. In taking a serious look at health care in the home of baby boomers or seniors, it is always a good idea to do an assessment of the environment in the light of what is currently happening. This can be done quite easily, by spending quality time with the baby boomer and and other family members. Visiting the family doctor with the baby boomer or senior and other family members is generally a good idea. Remember that many of these men and women will have had the same doctor for many years and their doctor may be almost the same age they are. The doctor will likely know the baby boomer or senior well and his or her preferences must be taken into consideration.

4. Remember that the baby boomer or senior in need of care, will have definite ideas about what he or she expects in terms of his or her own health care needs. Many of them may not have had sufficient care in the recent past and will improve immensely when proper health care needs are met. You may be totally amazed at the degree of improvement. They may or may not understand the current changes in the health care system, and you may have to explain them.

5. Dietary needs are especially important, as nutrition is a primary factor in health care. Assess the baby boomer or senior for his or her ability to provide adequate food to sustain his or her health. Many of them? may not have sufficient income to provide for their own dietary requirements. They may need to obtain a supplemental income of some kind. A few may be hoarding their disability or old age pension checks and not using them to meet their needs. Find out who is looking after their finances and work with that family member or other person. If necessary, find or designate a family member to take financial responsibility for them.

6. Assessing medical needs is a huge factor. Many baby boomers or seniors will be in need of wheelchairs, walkers, canes, etc. and have not had anyone help them in this regard. They may need drugs that they cannot afford and will require assistance in that respect. They may require other health care items that can be obtained quite easily. Ask them if they are taking their medications? If not, why not? Where are they obtaining them and are they over-priced? Are they hoarding their medications or using out-dated medications? Have they obtained generic drugs? Do they know what generic drugs are? How are their medications stored? Do they know how to dispose of medications that are outdated or have not been used?

7. Spiritual needs are extremely important to baby boomers and seniors, as the era in which they grew up probably focused on having those needs met. Does he or she have a priest, pastor or chaplain? Is that person aware of what this particular baby boomer or other senior stands in need of at this time in his or her life? Make contact with the person of their choice for seniors, if they are not able to do so.

8. Have plans been made for the baby boomer or senior, should he or she pass away unexpectedly? Is there a 'DNR' (do not resuscitate) order request, signed by the baby boomer or senior, family members and the doctor? Has a will been drawn up? If not, why not? Does he or she have legal counsel? This may prove to be extremely important in the future.

9. Fear and paranoia is a major issue with baby boomers or seniors, as many have had bad experiences previously with others including health care workers, lawyers, doctors, etc. A lot of them have had their homes broken into and things stolen by people who they have trusted, including family members and friends. It is like losing a part of oneself when there is a violation like this in their home. It is not easy to get a person to trust you when they have been violated in some way, by someone else.

10. Health involves healing, happiness and wholeness. You can be instrumental in bringing this into the life of a baby boomer or senior as a minor care giver, a family member, a personal support worker or a nurse. Consider carefully what you can or cannot do and then make a positive, constructive decision with respect to the baby boomer or senior in your life or under your care. Care is important, but quality care is even more important.

Remember that there are those around you who have gone through this before and that you are not alone in caring for your baby boomer or senior. There are many organizations which can be of help, as well. What you do can be instrumental in helping others to live to a ripe old age.

Think about doing some of these things for yourself also, if you are a baby boomer or a senior and you could be among the ones who live to be a hundred years of age or older.

Need help please continuing symptoms despite treatment - STDs ...

Hi doctor i have read your post on this board for a while and trust your advise I NEED HELP.
i am a married white male, 26 years old i recently visited an AMP and recieved a massage (she was fully clothed the entire time) and a handjob from the masseuse with lotion that she got out of a pump type bottle, after i ejaculated she can in the room with a warn towel to clean me off, i think the towel was steaming because she opened it and cooled it down before putting it on me.??The next few day i felt tingeling in my urethera which i attributed to be from the chemicals in the lotion.??I tried to abstain fro sex until the uretheral discomfort was gone.??That wednesday the 10th i had sex with my wife and i still had the discomfort but from reading on this board i did not think anything of it because it was a protected encounter.??I have had gonorrhea in the past and the feeling was all to familiar.??On sunday the 14th m wife complained of uti feeling and yellowish vaginal discharge.??We went to the doctor on the 18th and he prescribed us both z-pak's, i took mine in a single dose 1.5g and my wife took hers as directed.??On saturday the 20th my wife complained of more discharge (i was still having symptoms) we went back to the doctors and he gave me and her both 1000mg rocephin and 1g azithro, my wife only took rocephin shot.??I immediatly felt some relief within hours of the medication??but my wife's uti got worse so monday morning i called the doctor and asked if they could prescribe 2grams azithromycin (until we could get an appt with specialist the both of us) the doctor agreed and prescribed 2g Z-Max extended release oral suspension.??From what i have read on this medication the peak concentration in the blood is 57% lower than the immediate release so my wife took it along with 1000mg immediate release which at peak concentration would be equivilent to almost 1850mg of immediate release, i took only the z-max as at this point i was not feeliong 100%, and from previous std experience when treatment works relief comes within hours so i thought it would help.??I have experienced rocephin treatment failure with gonorrhea and the doctor retreated with 1000mg rocephin and 2g azithro which cured it (sept 10').??Ever since i have had paranoia about ceftriaxione resistant gonorrhea.??would this course of azithro work? would it be equivilent to a 2g single dose considering i have taken 4.5g of azithromycin in 5days so has she just in different doses.??So far iknow its a bacteria because it reacts to antibiotics and i know it is passed on sexually because my wife got symptoms after intercourse with me. was my assesment of the azithro my wife took correct that it was equivelent to 1850mg of immediate release?, if worst case scenario it was the ceftriaxione resistant strain)? why didnt it clear up with 1000mg rocephin could it be resistant ngu? dont kow what to do i am scared for my marriage and my wifes health i have quickly learned that the only safe sex is abstinance or monogamy.??Pleas help very worried and scared

Hurricane Sandy threatens U.S. after hammering Cuba

HAVANA (Reuters) - Hurricane Sandy swelled into a serious threat to much of the U.S. East Coast on Thursday after hammering Cuba's second-largest city and taking aim at the Bahamas, U.S. forecasters said.

Strengthening rapidly after tearing into Jamaica and crossing the warm Caribbean Sea, Sandy hit southeastern Cuba early on Thursday with 105-mph (169-kph) winds that cut power and toppled trees across the city of Santiago de Cuba.

Reports from the city of 500,000 people, about 470 miles southeast of Havana, indicated that many homes had been damaged or destroyed. According to one Cuban radio report, at least one person was killed, bringing the death toll to at least three, including fatalities in Jamaica and Haiti.

U.S. government forecasters warned that much of the U.S. East Coast could get swiped by Sandy, with flooding, heavy rains and high winds beginning Thursday in Florida. By early next week - amid final preparations for the crucial November 6 presidential election - the storm could hit an area of New England where Hurricane Irene caused severe damage last year.

Forecasters said the hardest-hit areas could span anywhere from the coastal Carolinas up to Maine, but New York City and the Boston area were also both potentially in harm's way.

"It is likely that significant impacts will be felt over portions of the U.S. East Coast through the weekend and into early next week," the National Hurricane Center said.

"HIGH-IMPACT EVENT"

"It's going to be a high-impact event," said Bob Oravec, a lead forecaster with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Hydro-Meteorological Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.

"It has the potential to be a very significant storm with respect to coastal flooding, depending on exactly where it comes in. Power outages are definitely a big threat," he said.

In Cuba, communications were difficult hours after the eye of the dangerous Category 2 hurricane came ashore just west of Santiago de Cuba with waves up to 29 feet and a 6-foot (2-meter) storm surge that caused power outages and extensive coastal flooding, the Cuban weather service said.

The storm and driving rains triggered widespread flooding across the southwestern half of Haiti, with reports of life-threatening landslides in some areas.

At 2 p.m. EDT (1800 GMT), the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said Sandy was about 25 miles east of Great Exuma island in the Bahamas and packing maximum sustained winds of 105 mph.

It was still a Category 2 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale of hurricane intensity, but some weakening was expected over the next 48 hours as Sandy moved through the Bahamas island chain.

High winds, rains and pounding surf are expected across parts of Florida's Atlantic coast, with the biggest impact starting on Thursday night and lasting through Friday.

Unlike Irene, which caused billions of dollars in damage as it lashed the U.S. Northeast in August last year, Sandy is forecast to drop below hurricane strength before making U.S. landfall. But it will be moving slower than Irene did, likely bringing more rain and increasing its potential for damage, weather forecasters said.

At $4.3 billion in losses, Irene ranks as one of the 10 costliest hurricanes, adjusted for inflation and excluding federally insured damage, according to the Insurance Information Institute, an industry group.

"A BILLION-DOLLAR DISASTER"

Jeff Masters, a hurricane specialist and blogger with private forecaster Weather Underground (www.wunderground.com), said a landfall by Sandy on Monday along the U.S. Mid-Atlantic Coast could trigger "a billion-dollar disaster."

"In this scenario, Sandy would be able to bring sustained winds near hurricane force over a wide stretch of heavily populated coast," he said.

Alternately, Masters said, some computer forecast models indicated Sandy had the potential to unleash "the heaviest October rains ever reported in the northeast U.S., Nova Scotia and New Brunswick."

Oravec said there could be tropical-storm to hurricane-force winds on the coast and added: "Coastal flooding will be a big concern."

A Category 2 storm has winds between 96 and 110 mph, meaning that Sandy was still within a whisker of becoming a Category 3 hurricane as it bore down on the Bahamas.

Bahamians formed long lines at food stores and gas stations on Thursday as they made last-minute preparations for Sandy.

Prime Minister Perry Christie activated the government's emergency management crews as the 350,000 residents across the 700-island chain braced for a storm more powerful than initially projected.

Lynden Pindling International Airport, the main gateway to the Bahamas and its capital, Nassau, was closed, affecting some 6,700 passengers.

"I'd be surprised if it becomes a significant loss for us, but we're not counting our chickens, as these things change at short notice," said Tom Duff, general manager of Insurance Company of the Bahamas, a leading Nassau-based property and casualty insurer.

A tropical storm warning along the Florida east coast has been extended northward to the state's Flagler Beach, while a tropical storm watch has been issued for the northeastern Florida coast from Fernandina Beach to north of Flagler Beach.

Sandy is expected to hit the United States during a full moon, increasing the flood potential, since tides will be at or near their highest.

"There's a big potential for huge effects from the storm," said NOAA's Oravec.

"We can't rule out the potential for snow eventually as we go into the week and the storm moves inland," he said.

The Note's Must-Reads for Thursday October 25, 2012

The Note's Must-Reads are a round-up of today's political headlines and stories from ABC News and the top U.S. newspapers. Posted Monday through Friday right here at www.abcnews.com

Compiled by ABC News' Carrie Halperin, Jayce Henderson and Danielle Genet

PRESIDENT OBAMA ABC News' Devin Dwyer: " Obama Talks Donald Trump, Tigers With Jay Leno on 'Tonight Show'" President Obama's 48-hour non-stop campaign "extravaganza" took a detour from the battleground states Wednesday for a visit to Los Angeles and the "Tonight Show," where Obama poked fun at his first debate performance and Donald Trump, and hinted that he's rooting for Detroit in baseball's World Series. Hours after Trump unveiled a dud of a potential "bombshell" against Obama - a call on the president to release his college records in exchange for a $5 million donation to charity - Leno asked the president why the media mogul and reality TV star seems to have it out for the president. LINK

The Los Angeles Times' Michael A. Memoli: " Obama objects to Mourdock's rape comment, skewers Trump" President Obama told Jay Leno Wednesday night that Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock's comments about pregnancy and rape illustrate why men alone should not be making decisions about women's issues. "Rape is rape. It is a crime," Obama told the "Tonight Show" host in an interview set to air this evening, according to an account from a pool reporter traveling with the president. LINK

The Washington Times' Dave Boyer: " Obama says Latino vote is key to victory, vows immigration reform in 2013" The Obama campaign's reliance on Hispanic voters in the upcoming election was on full display Wednesday as President Obama dangled the prospect of immigration reform next year, and a top aide predicted that the country's fast-growing number of minority voters will propel the president to a second term over rival Mitt Romney next month. LINK

The Washington Post's Lori Montgomery and Peter Wallsten: " Obama says he'll renew pursuit of 'grand bargain,' offering specifics on agenda" President Obama, criticized as failing to offer a vision for a potential second term, has begun sketching out his agenda with greater specificity in recent days, including a pledge to solve the nation's in?trac?table budget problems within "the first six months." In an interview made public Wednesday, Obama said he would pursue a "grand bargain" with Republicans to tame the national debt and would quickly follow that with a push to overhaul the nation's immigration laws. LINK

Politico's Jennifer Epstein: " Obama counting on ground game" President Barack Obama's campaign is confident that its ground game will produce the winning margin in November - but while they're well ahead of Mitt Romney, things are a lot tougher than they were in 2008. The race is tighter. Enthusiasm is lower. Canvassers face voters disappointed in Obama's first term. Phone bankers find undecideds seriously considering a vote for Mitt Romney. And they're facing competition from a joint Romney-Republican National Committee operation that's deeper and more robust than what John McCain put together four years ago. LINK

Bloomberg's Lisa Lerer and Margaret Talev: " Obama Says Republicans Risk Alienating Hispanic Voters" President Barack Obama said Hispanic voters may make the difference in his re-election chances because his rival Mitt Romney and other Republicans have alienated the nation's biggest minority group with anti- immigrant rhetoric. With 13 days until the presidential election, the two candidates stopped in some of the battleground states that both campaigns say will decide the election. While Obama targeted voting groups he's counting on to win re-election, Romney focused on the slow recovery of the U.S. economy under Obama. LINK

ROMNEY USA Today's Martha T. Moore: " Romney avoids entertainment TV" It has become so standard for presidential candidates to visit all kinds of TV shows to grab the attention of all kinds of voters that as President Obama heads to an MTV forum on Friday, it's more notable who's not going along: Mitt Romney. On Wednesday, Obama visited with Jay Leno on his late-night chat show; last week he sat down with Jon Stewart on The Daily Show. LINK

Wall Street Journal's Colleen McCain Nelson and Laura Meckler: " Romney's Calls for Change Prompt an Obama Warning" As Mitt Romney makes his final pitch to voters, he is casting himself as the candidate of change, the only one in the presidential race who can fix Washington. It is an attempt at role reversal, as the Republican presidential nominee tries to own the message that President Barack Obama used effectively in 2008 to persuade voters that he could move the country beyond its partisan stalemate. LINK

The New York Times' Jeff Zeleny and Ashley Parker: " Romney Upbeat, but Math Is the Same" Mitt Romney is savoring the energy surrounding his candidacy, talking with rising confidence about his ability to overtake President Obama in the closing days of the race. He dwells far less on the biggest obstacle facing his campaign: the Electoral College. LINK

The Hill's Jonathan Easley: " Romney gains favorability, Obama wins over women in latest polls" A flurry of new polls shows Mitt Romney eliminating a likeability gap with President Obama, but the incumbent rebuilding an advantage with female voters. LINK

OTHER ABC News' Russell Goldman: " Donald 'Bombshell' Fails to Blow Up" Donald Trump today pledged $5 million to a charity of President Obama's choice, provided the president makes public his college applications and transcripts and releases his passport history, a far cry from the October-surprise bombshell Trump had promised. Calling the offer a "major announcement," Trump released a video via Twitter at noon to much ballyhoo, and his online followers grew by the hundreds in the moments before the video was released. LINK

Wall Street Journal's Monica Langley: " For Clinton as Top Diplomat, Tumultuous Closing Chapter" Just weeks ago, Hillary Clinton was poised to glide out of office as secretary of state with job-approval ratings near 70% and a political buzz suggesting she is already the 2016 Democratic presidential candidate to beat. Then, disaster struck at the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya. LINK

Boston Globe's Glen Johnson: " Winner of popular vote may be denied presidency" The exceptionally close race between President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney has once again raised the possibility of a candidate winning the popular vote but losing the White House by falling short in electoral votes. In most recent scenarios, Romney is projected as the victim in this odd quirk of the US voting system. LINK

Military plans new hypersonic flight after failure

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The U.S. military said Wednesday it is planning another unmanned hypersonic flight in the wake of a failed attempt.

The flight, scheduled for next spring or summer, would be the fourth test of the experimental X-51A Waverider designed to reach Mach 6, or 3,600 mph, after being dropped by a B-52 bomber.

The Air Force has been studying hypersonic technologies with the hopes of deploying fast strikes around the globe.

Two months ago, a problem with a control fin during the third flight caused an X-51A to lose balance and crash off the Southern California coast.

Though the aircraft successfully detached from the B-52 and ignited its rocket booster to fly to Mach 4.8, it became unstable and did not activate its exotic scramjet engine ? considered the key feature of the test.

An investigation ruled out software or power failures. Signs point to a "random vibration issue," though more work is needed to pinpoint the exact cause, said program manager Charlie Brink at the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.

None of flights so far has reached the intended goal of six times the speed of sound. During the first flight in 2010, an X-51A flew near Mach 5 for three minutes. A test flight last year ended prematurely with an X-51A unsuccessfully trying to restart its engine.

Brink said he expected the military to continue hypersonic flight research after next year's final flight but did not get into specifics.

Kenner welcomes Jefferson Parish Council with gifts, good humor ...

Mayor Mike Yenni welcomed the Jefferson Parish Council to Kenner on Wednesday. His grandfather, in the framed picture behind him, was a Kenner mayor and parish president. (Photo by The Times-Picayune archive)

Kenner welcomed the Jefferson Parish Council to City Hall on Wednesday with gifts and good humor for the parish panel's first meeting in Jefferson's most populous municipality. "I hope we don't break the fire code today," Mayor Mike Yenni told the council, which typically draws a much larger crowd to its meetings than does the Kenner City Council.

"I have some gifts for all of y'all," Yenni said, "none of which were paid for with city funds." His aides distributed notepad portfolios commemorating the meeting, keys to the city, cufflinks for the six men on the council and Parish President John Young and a pin for Councilwoman Cynthia Lee-Sheng.

Yenni was joined by City Council members Maria DeFrancesch and Kent Denapolis in thanking the Parish Council for the official visit. He noted that council Chairman Elton Lagasse grew up nearby and has much in common with his grandfather, former Mayor and Parish President Joe Yenni. Both made their marks as schoolteachers and athletic coaches before venturing into politics.

There was nothing new about conducting government business in the Kenner City Council chamber for Parish Councilman Ben Zahn. He served on the Kenner council before his election to the parish seat in 2011.

Nor is the Parish Council a stranger to several Yenni staffers who formerly worked for the parish government: Chief Administrative Officer Mike Quigley, Public Works Director Jose Gonzalez, Community Development Director Arletta Terrell and mayoral assistant Cindy Roth.

Yenni warned Parish Councilman Mark Spears Jr., whose district extends into Kenner, that Registrar of Voters Dennis DiMarco is hunting for money to fix the parking lot at the registrar's new satellite office in Rivertown. DiMarco "is looking for some blacktop," Yenni said.

"He's got some money hidden," Lagasse joked.

Young said he, too, was pleased to attend a Parish Council meeting in Kenner. "I just have one complaint: I was told there was no coffee readily available."

Perhaps he wasn't looking hard enough.

"I've got coffee," Lagasse said. "I don't know why you don't."

What's Really in Halloween Candy | Greatist

What's Really In Your Halloween Candy

These days, there?s more to a candy bar than simply chocolate. With a laundry list of?ingredients, it?s hard to know which ingredients aren?t the best to ingest, and why they?re there even in our candy bars in the first place. So we?ve peeled back the wrapper to uncover which ingredients are harmless, and which should go straight from the trick-or-treat bag to the trash.

What Is This In My Candy Bar?! ? The Need-to-Know

From the weirdly named additives to surprising ingredients and ominous oils, here are some ingredients in candy that will freak us out even when Halloween is over:

Safe
  • Tertiary butyl hydroquinone. This impossible-to-pronounce preservative prevents candy from going rancid and enhances storage life. Better yet, both the FDA and European Food Safety Authority say TBHQ is safe for humans. (And thank goodness, since it?s in America?s favorite Reece?s Peanut Butter Cup.)
  • Polyglycerol polyricinoleate. PGPR is a chemical that blends the ingredients in candy bars to make chocolate super smooth. It?s safe for humans to consume and is found in Kit Kat Bars and Hershey?s Milk Chocolate Bars[].
  • Soy lecithin. This additive is a substance extracted from soybeans that emulsifies the cocoa and cocoa butter in candy, keeping the ingredients from separating. Although soy can be a dangerfood when eaten in large quantities, (messing with hormone balance and testosterone levels) studies show small amounts of soy lecithin in our candy (like Almond Joy?s and M&M?s!) are a-okay[][].
Caution
  • Artificial flavors. Adding some flava flav to food can make them taste more appetizing (Butterfingers, anyone?). The studies of artificial flavors (not to be confused with artificial coloring!) are few and far between, but the Center For Science in the Public Interest says artificial flavoring is probably safe.
  • Milk fat. We?re talkin? more than just whole milk, here. Milk fat is the main component of cream, and is composed of triglycerides, a type of fat that may thicken the artery walls and increase cardiovascular risk[]. The bad news is milk fat is found in most chocolate candies, including Snickers and Milky Way bars.
  • Salt. Yep, it?s not just in the savory stuff. Salt is often added to candy bars to offset all the sugar and corn syrup. And we definitely don?t need any more of the salty stuff: Most Americans consume more sodium than recommended (2,300 mg) which can raise blood pressure and contribute to heart disease.
Avoid
  • Artificial coloring. Sorry M&M?s and candy corn, it looks like you?re doing more harm than good. Although artificial coloring may make candy more appealing, it has been linked to behavioral problems, asthma, and even cancer when consumed in large quanities[][][]. Another (not so fun) fact? After Halloween in 1950, food dye Orange #1 was banned from candy (for good!) after many kids got sick.
  • High fructose corn syrup. Sugar and spice may not be so nice. The consumption of HFCS, a sweetener derived from (you guessed it!) corn, may sometimes lead to kidney damage and liver disease in high doses[][]. Hold off on those king-size Twix and Milky Ways (and most other candy bars, in fact)!
  • Hydrogenated parm kernel oil. If you thought milk fat was bad, check out this oil creeping in our candy. More than 80 percent of palm kernel oil?s fat is the saturated kind (which can up LDL cholesterol) but is often used in foods because it?s cheaper than alternatives[].

Have a Healthier Halloween ? Your Action Plan

Don?t fret! These sneaky ingredients don?t have to take all the fun (and flavor) from Halloween. Check out these tips for a healthier Halloween, no creepy ingredients included.

  • Choose better. Okay, there?s no denying a least a few pieces of candy on Halloween. So while we?re at it, let?s pick some better options, like dark chocolate Raisinetes, mini Hershey Special Dark bars, or a Twizzler or two. Or try low fat popcorn and pretzels for some crunch!
  • Make your own. Ditch the wrapper and make candy from scratch. Try some classics like Snickers, Reece?s Peanut Butter Cups, or these vegan Kit Kats.? That way, you?ll have control over everything that goes into the mix!
  • Sharing is caring. Stuck with a whole bag of Halloween treats? Make sure to spread the love! Bring the bag into the office or share with friends, while allowing yourself a bite-sized treat when that sweet tooth kicks in!
  • Get creative. The stomach can be satisfied on Halloween without going down the candy aisle. Sip on some spiced cider, munch on a caramel apple, or dip some sliced fruit in a creamy pumpkin dip.
  • Give it away. Donate the extra goods to people around the world. Organizations like Operation Shoe Box and Operation Gratitude are great places to start.
  • Celebrate outside. Halloween isn?t just about the sweets. Focus the fun on other traditions, like hayrides, apple picking, or walking through a haunted house (eek!). We promise you won?t miss those Almond Joy?s.

(AP) ? Aspirin, one of the world's oldest and cheapest drugs, has shown remarkable promise in treating colon cancer in people with mutations in a gene that's thought to play a role in the disease.

Among patients with the mutations, those who regularly took aspirin lived longer than those who didn't, a major study found. Five years after their cancers were diagnosed, 97 percent of the aspirin users were still alive versus 74 percent of those not taking the drug.

Aspirin seemed to make no difference in patients who did not have the mutations.

This sort of study can't prove that aspirin caused the better survival, and doctors say more research must confirm the findings before aspirin can be recommended more widely. The study wasn't designed to test aspirin; people were taking it on their own for various reasons.

Still, the results suggest that this simple medicine might be the cheapest gene-targeting therapy ever found for cancer. About one-sixth of all colon cancer patients have the mutated gene and might be helped by aspirin. And aspirin costs just pennies a day.

"It's exciting to think that something that's already in the medicine cabinet may really have an important effect" beyond relieving pain and helping to prevent heart attacks, said Dr. Andrew Chan of Massachusetts General Hospital. He and others from Harvard Medical School led the study, which appears in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

Cancers of the colon or rectum are a leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. More than 140,000 new cases and 51,000 deaths from them are expected this year in the United States.

Several studies suggest that aspirin may help fight cancer, especially colorectal tumors. It is often recommended for people who have colon cancer and others at high risk of developing it. But it's not advised for wider use, or for cancer prevention, because it can cause serious bleeding in the stomach and gut.

What has been lacking, doctors say, is a good way to tell which people might benefit the most, so aspirin's risks would be justified. Chan's study suggests a way to do that.

It involved 964 people diagnosed with various stages of colon cancer who were among nearly 175,000 participants in two health studies based at Harvard that began in the 1980s. Every two years, they filled out surveys on their health habits, including aspirin use.

Most had surgery for their cancer, and many also had chemotherapy. They gave tumor tissue samples that could be tested for gene activity. Researchers focused on one gene, PIK3CA, that is involved in a key pathway that fuels cancer's growth and spread. Aspirin seems to blunt that pathway, so the scientists looked at its use in relation to the gene.

In those whose tumors had a mutation in that gene, regular aspirin use cut the risk of dying of colon cancer by 82 percent and of dying of any cause by 46 percent during the study period of about 13 years.

Only two of the 62 regular aspirin users whose tumors had the mutated gene died within five years of their cancer diagnosis versus 23 of 90 non-aspirin users with such a mutation.

The results are "quite exciting," said Dr. Boris Pasche, a cancer specialist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham who wrote an editorial that appears with the study in the medical journal. Half a dozen drugs are used to treat colon cancer, but only one meaningfully extends survival in people whose cancers have not widely spread, he said.

"Now we may have aspirin. That's why it's a big deal," Pasche said.

In the study, the dose of aspirin ? baby or regular ? didn't seem to matter, just whether any aspirin was regularly used.

The test for the gene is not expensive and is simple enough that most cancer centers should be able to do it, Chan and Pasche said.

The National Institutes of Health and several foundations paid for the study. One of the 17 authors consults for Bayer, a leading aspirin maker. Pasche has been a paid speaker for two companies that make cancer treatments and has two patent applications under review related to cancer treatment.

Researchers warn that aspirin may not be responsible for the improved survival seen in this study. Differences in how the patients' cancer was treated could have played a role.

For that reason, they say the next step should be a study where some people with the mutated gene are given aspirin and others are not, so their cancer outcomes can be compared more directly.

One colon cancer patient, L. Stewart Keefe, 60, a retired interior decorator and painter from Alton, N.H., decided several years ago to try it.

"I figured, what have I got to lose by taking some aspirin? It just seems like it was a simple enough thing to take," she said. "For me the bleeding risk is a very small possible consequence" compared with the risk of cancer coming back, she said.

Now PHP Developers can Build Android Apps Using Zend Studio 10

There are 5 Million web developers today proficient with PHP. This population can now potentially be Android App developers as well.

ZendCon, the annual trade show for Zend, the PHP company, announced that Zend Studio 10 (Zend?s IDE) will include functionalities that will let PHP developers prototype and build native mobile apps using PHP.?The new capability includes a drag-and-drop mobile interface builder, integration with the Apache project?s?Cordova?to access native mobile APIs such as those for cameras and accelerometers, and built-in?PhoneGap?integration for developers to publish native app packages to the various app stores.

Here is a video of a PHP developer making an app in about 10 mins. This is really impressive!

Is this Just Another Port or will this Amount to more?

We?ve seen numerous ports of Android apps built using Python, Ruby, HTML and CSS etc, but till now, we haven?t seen large scale adoption. Java still continues to be the predominant development language for android. None of these ports have been able to provide the performance that a Java based native app brings. But with the API support using Cordova through integration with Zend Cloud this might change.

However, this inclusion of PHP developers into the Android App making ecosystem can definitely help in making cross over (Desktop and Mobile) App and will definitely help developers from a PHP background who are looking to take up App development in Android. Furthermore, this could also be an answer to Microsoft?s Windows 8 development environment which supports multiple programming languages for building native apps.

It will be very interesting to see how many people actually take up Android app development using PHP on Zend Studio 10, but until then, its a plus 5 million potential app developers for the Android App development ecosystem.

Rise Above The Competition With These Internet Marketing ...

Internet marketing can be an intimidating arena for someone who has never attempted to market on the internet before. Nevertheless, it?s an essential cornerstone of any modern business marketing program, providing fantastic results at a low cost. Read on to discover the tips that will put your company into the 21st century with internet marketing!

Using testimonials from satisfied customers is a valid internet marketing strategy. A wide spread of happy customers reporting on the value of a website will encourage potential customers who identify with them to investigate the website further. Just a few personal stories of appreciation will show website visitors that the site?s products and services can satisfy their needs.

Try to use words and phrases like ?new,? ?revolutionary? and ?just released? in your online adverts. People are more likely to buy products or services that provide solutions to problems which can?t be solved by products or services that they already own or use. So, using these words or phrases in your ads can increase sales.

It is always wise to include keywords in all HTML title tags. By doing this, search engines will be more apt to factor them into search result calculations, thus facilitating higher page rankings for your content. In keeping with this theory, it is also important to include effective keywords in tags, titles and descriptors relating to videos you place online.

Use press releases to market your business online. From new products to new corporate digs to new personnel, press releases can inspire journalists to mention your business in either online or off-line publications, and you may even end up being mentioned on big time new sites, such as Google News. Some inbound links from other websites are an added bonus.

Put your full address, name and phone number on every page of your site. This will show customers that you are a real person. It will make them believe that you are not pulling a scam, and it will also give them an easy way to access you if they need to.

Website design is important for your internet marketing success. Use the right graphics and photos on your site that relate and support the product that you are selling. This gives visitors a clear picture and vision of the product. You could use photos and graphics which show peoples emotion when owning the product.

You can easily purchase spaces designed to pop up in targeted searches, making your website address highly visible to people interested in similar products or content. This can divert traffic to you and build brand recognition through repeated viewing. These spaces are typically inexpensive to purchase, and are a great investment for their many benefits.

If you are having difficulty selling one of your products, or you have a newer version available and need to get rid of your old stock, have your customers contact you to name their price for it. Accept offers through email or even exchange the product for another item or service. This will allow you to get rid of something you no longer need and still make something off of it.

Now that you have a few tips to follow when it comes to Internet marketing you should incorporate them right away. The sooner you start properly marketing your business the sooner you will be able to get the traffic you need to really have your business thrive and be the greatest success it can be.

Ellen DeGeneres to receive top humor prize in DC

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Jane Lynch and John Leguizamo are joining a lineup that includes Jimmy Kimmel and Kristin Chenoweth to honor Ellen DeGeneres with the nation's top humor prize in Washington.

The Kennedy Center is awarding DeGeneres the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor on Monday night. The show will be broadcast Oct. 30 on PBS stations.

Star entertainers will deliver tribute performances to salute DeGeneres, 54. The lineup includes Jason Mraz, John Krasinski and Sean Hayes.

When she first heard she was receiving the same honor that Bill Cosby, Tina Fey and Will Ferrell won in recent years, DeGeneres joked, "It really makes me wonder ... why didn't I get this sooner?"

DeGeneres began her career as a comedy club emcee in her native New Orleans. In 1986 after she performed on Johnny Carson's show, he invited her over to his desk chat. She was the first female comedian to receive that invitation from Carson.

Turning to acting, DeGeneres landed sitcoms on Fox and ABC, eventually starring in "Ellen" from 1994 to 1998. She broke new ground and a taboo in 1997 when she came out publicly as a lesbian and her TV persona then became the first lead character on prime-time TV to reveal she was gay. A record 46 million viewers watched the episode.

The show began to tank, though, and was canceled a year later. The feeling of rejection was enough to send DeGeneres into a depression. Still, "Ellen" paved the way for future shows to feature gay characters, from "Will and Grace" to "Modern Family."

DeGeneres came back with a CBS sitcom, movie roles and even a stint as an "American Idol" judge. Forbes magazine has ranked her as the 47th most powerful woman in the world and estimated her earnings at $53 million last year.

Her hit talk show that debuted in 2003 is now in its 10th season. Among other achievements, that's where she eventually persuaded President Barack Obama to dance.

"She's brilliantly shined a light on society, and that's what Mark Twain did," said Cappy McGarr, an executive producer for the Mark Twain Prize show, when the award was announced in May.

The prize honors comedians in Mark Twain's tradition of satire and social commentary. Past winners include Steve Martin, Lily Tomlin and Whoopi Goldberg.

Defining A Growth Hacker: Growth Is Not A Marketing Strategy

aaron?Viral marketing is not a marketing strategy,? Andrew Chen wrote back in 2007. ?Successful viral products don?t have viral marketing bolted on once the product has been developed. It?s not a marketing strategy. Instead, it?s designed into the product from the very beginning as part of the fundamental architecture of the experience.?

(AP) ? Clashes in Beirut and other parts of Lebanon killed at least two people and left more than a dozen wounded overnight as fears grow that Syria's civil war is spilling over into its smaller neighbor, security officials and state-run media said Monday.

The latest spasms of violence came amid rising tension between Lebanese groups that support and oppose the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad and in the wake of the assassination last week of a top anti-Syrian intelligence official in Lebanon.

Most of Lebanon's Sunnis have backed Syria's mainly Sunni rebels, while Lebanese Shiites tend to back Assad. The Syrian president, like many who dominate his regime, is a member of the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Lebanese Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan, who was killed in a car bomb in an east Beirut neighborhood on Friday, was a Sunni who challenged Syria and Hezbollah.

His assassination has threatened to shatter Lebanon's fragile political balance. Many politicians have blamed Syria for the killing and angry protesters tried to storm the government palace after al-Hassan's funeral Sunday but were pushed back by troops who opened fire in the air and fired tear gas.

Overnight, Sunni and Shiite gunmen clashed in two Beirut neighborhoods and officials also reported heavy clashes late Sunday and early Monday in the northern city of Tripoli and towns between Beirut and the southern city of Sidon.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media, said a man was killed in shooting in the Wadi Zayneh area north of Sidon and another person died in the Tripoli clashes. The officials said the clashes wounded at least six people in Beirut and 10 in Tripoli.

An Associated Press photographer saw dozens of gunmen roaming the streets Monday of Beirut's predominantly Sunni neighborhood of Tariq Jadideh, where much of the fighting had taken place. Local Sunni leaders were calling the gunmen by telephone urging them to pull out of the streets.

In some roads around Tariq Jadideh, masked Sunni gunmen set up checkpoints, stopping cars and asking people about their destination and where they were coming from.

A woman who lives in the neighborhood said the fighting began shortly after midnight and lasted until sunrise.

"We couldn't sleep because of the shooting. There were also some booms," she said, referring to rocket-propelled grenades. She asked that her name not be mused for fear of reprisals.

In Tripoli, residents said scores of soldiers deployed around the city in an attempt to bring back calm. The military also set up checkpoints, searched cars and asked people for identity cards.
