Role Of Ayurveda in Psoriasis Therapy

What is Psoriasis?

It is a kind of inflammatory skin disease. It is mainly distinguished by raised patches on the skin like fish scales. The affected area of the skin gets dried along with itching sensation. This sensation sometime causes blood to ooze out from the skin. Psoriasis is a chronic disease and it often affects the people in the age group of 15 to 40 years.

Causes & Symptoms of Psoriasis

There are no particular causes for this disease and it depends on the hereditary bias. Problems caused due to respiratory tract, sunlight, trauma, climatic changes and mental stress can worsen this disease. The main thing that triggers this problem is due to over activeness of immune system causing damage in the skin cells.

The indications of psoriasis disease vary from one to another according to age and other conditions.

Some of the common symptoms are flaky skin, red patches, cracked skin, and joint swelling

Ayurveda and Psoriasis

In ayurveda psoriasis is caused due to dysfunction of kapha and vata. This happens due to the accumulation of toxins in our body. Ayurveda for psoriasis treatment lasts up to 21 to 28 days. During the treatment the concerned person have to follow specific diet chart throughout the course of time. It is advised to continue the diet even after treatment in order to lead a healthier life.

While treating psoriasis through ayurveda excessive intake of some food stuffs are avoided to minimize the progress of the disease. Food items to be avoided are yogurt, salty food, black gram, seafood, preservative foods and sour items

Ayurvedic psoriasis treatment

Ayurveda for psoriasis treatment consists of three approaches such as

? Ahara (diet)

? Vihara (lifestyle)

? Oushada (medicines)

Therapies done to cure psoriasis are:

? Panchakarma: It is the basic method used for purification of our body to remove the toxin elements.

? Abhayangam: It is a kind of stroke massage and this process is done by applying herbal oil all over the body for about 45 minutes.

? Snehapanam: This process involves inhaling of ghee or medicated oil. This treatment is done as purification process for psoriasis. It is given for at least 8 to 12 days during therapy.

? Elakizhi: It is a kind of massage done with medicated leaves to tackle the problems related to joint pain, cramps and psoriasis. In this process herbal leaves are tied in a cloth bag and it is dipped in herbal oil. Then the bag is applied all over the body.

? Takra Dhara: In ayurveda for psoriasis treatment medicated buttermilk is poured from the centre of the forehead.

? Pizhichil: It is performed by with warm herbal oil that is applied all over the body for about 60 to 90 minutes.

? Vasthi: It is called as medicated Enema and herbal oil is applied through rectum for 5 to 25 days.

? Sirovasthi: In this treatment, lukewarm oil is poured from a cap on the head for about 15 to 60 minutes.

? Virechanam: It helps in removing toxin from pitta & vata.

? Rakta Mokshana: Blood purification therapy.

? Pathyam: This is a strict diet chart during and after psoriasis treatment.
