Free Software Foundation drives fundraising effort for 'fully free' Replicant Android fork

Free Software Foundation drives fundraising effort for 'fully free' Replicant Android fork

Android variants come in various guises, some liberating, some a bit cheeky, and others, entirely free. Free, as in free to you, and free from any kind of licensing issues -- and Replicant is one such example. The project has been around since 2010, but a new fundraising initiative by the Free Software Foundation promises to give it a vital boost. The key difference with Replicant and many other Android spin-offs is that it doesn't rely on proprietary software for it to play nice with vendor hardware. While most of Android is free, it's at this hardware interface level that things get a bit more complex. The FSF hopes that by driving investment towards Replicant more hardware can be supported, in turn opening the OS up to even more users. Sound like something you can get behind? Head over to the source and show your support.

Fighting Tooth and Claw with Wolverine Examining the Healing Power of an X-Man

?[Wolverine?s] mutation? He has uncharted regenerative capabilities, enabling him to heal rapidly??

  • Dr. Jean Grey to Cyclops and Professor Charles Xavier in the Marvel movie ?X-Men? (2000)

Wolverine was created, designed, and drawn by Len Wein, John Romita Sr., and Herb Trimpe and had his full comic book debut in ?The Incredible Hulk? #181 in November of 1974. But, like all comic book heroes, Wolverine also has multiple origins. In the 2009 graphic novel ?Wolverine: Origin? we meet Wolverine as James Howlett living in mid-1880s Alberta, Canada. He then moves to a mining town in northern British Columbia and goes by ?Logan?.

After spending some time living with wolves and foraging from the land he comes back to live with the Blackfoot Indians and next enters the Canadian army circa World War I. Eventually he winds up in Japan and in World War II hooks up with Captain America as a kind of mercenary for hire. He serves in an elite Canadian paramilitary unit, then makes his way to the CIA and finally ?Team X?. Black Ops time.

Eventually unbreakable adamantium claws are grafted to his bones (and upgrade his skeleton). This complements his biological mutant abilities. His main mutant power is rapid healing or ?mutant healing factor?. This rapid healing allows for regeneration of damaged (or even destroyed) bodily tissues that exceed anything a ?non-mutant? is capable of.

In the movies and comic books Wolverine almost comes out as indestructible, like Superman. The difference is Wolverine does get hurt and injured. A lot. But he heals so fast it almost doesn?t seem to matter. This begs the question?is it actually possible to speed up healing?

And there?s something else wrapped up in the concept of rapid healing. Healing from injury may be linked with the ability to regenerate whole parts of the body. The axolotl?Ambystoma Mexicanum?has been well studied scientifically because it can regenerate whole limbs. The axolotl can also accept tissue transplants from other animals very readily. In short, it has amazing healing and growth potential. The axolotl is like a naturally occurring version of the mutant healing factor found in the comic book Wolverine. But without sharp adamantium claws (too bad). Or a yellow jumpsuit (thankfully).

The observed fact that some animals?like the axolotyl, newts, and planarian worms?can regenerate their own tissues has long been held as an ancient capability that all animals might have buried deep within their DNA. This has raised the tantalizing possibility that if we could just learn where and what in the newt genome was coding for healing and regeneration we could figure out how to turn that on in us humans.

Just recently, though, analysis of the newt genome shows that this capability may be a unique specialization that recently evolved. On top of that, the genome itself is much larger than originally estimated clocking in at about an order of magnitude larger than our own human genome. This complicates sequencing efforts.

So we aren?t quite up to regeneration of whole limbs yet. And it will be pretty challenging to actually get there. We are though, well on our way to better understanding and improving healing by using low-level laser light.

The really intriguing thing about this technology?the power behind the procedure?is that it is simple. It is based on ?photobiomodulation? which means it uses light. No gamma rays, x-rays, or some kind of other deadly-sounding comic book fictional energy rays are needed. It uses the energy in the photons that are parts of the visible spectrum of light and helps activate cellular processes to heal faster.

The basic concept is that low level laser light penetrates mitochondria?our cellular powerhouses?deep within the injured tissues. The photons interact with the enzyme cytochrome C oxidase and this energy is then converted to chemical energy that our cells can use?ATP. The outcome is increased tissue blood flow and energy supply. Since the biggest issue with healing is a lack of blood flow in the tissue that you are hoping will heal, anything that can be done to increase blood flow will help with healing.

So far this approach of using light to help accelerate healing has been used in many different tissues. These have applications that range literally from head to toe and are captured in the Figure below. I?ve only highlighted some of the potential applications for Wolverine in the figure below. More are currently being investigated, along with attempts to refine the dosage (time and intensity most notably) needed for a given tissue.

Low-level laser light could be used to help accelerate healing of Wolverine?s injuries. Photo adapted from 5of7, Wikimedia Commons. Biomedical applications extracted from Hashmi et al (2010) ?Role of Low-Level Laser Therapy in Neurorehabilitation?.

But would Wolverine be able to find devices to help him heal? Some really interesting recent commercial advances have come from dentistry. In the case of Wolverine, strong teeth is probably a good idea anyway and a new procedure called ?OsseoPulse? bone regeneration from Biolux Research Inc. has changed the game. This procedure may be able to speed up healing by as much as 50% faster than usual after dental implant procedures.

I spoke with Kevin Strange, President and CEO of Biolux Research, the company in the vanguard of this approach. He called the ?OsseoPulse? procedure a ?great example of translational basic research from bench, to bedside and beyond culminating in a useful product?. Engineers and scientists in many areas of biomedical research are constantly seeking this translation from research concept to useful real-world application.

Of course, none of this really creates the kind of healing factor typically on display when Wolverine is in full-on combat action. Like the scene in X-Men 3 (2007) where Wolverine is basically dissolving and healing while fighting Jean Grey as ?Dark Phoenix?. He absorbed an incredible amount of energy and it is pretty hard to imagine any procedure compensating for this kind of tissue damage and overall destruction.

Even though we are nowhere close to that kind of recovery and healing, we are closing in on more rapid healing and more rapid recovery in tissues throughout the body.

And that outcome can benefit everyone?from superheroes to you and me.

??E. Paul Zehr (2013)

Harvard B-school interview: An inside view - Fortune Management

By John A. Byrne

121023090706-harvard-business-school-students-monster

(Poets&Quants) -- For two full weeks before his MBA admissions interview at Harvard Business School, Alex Kleiner would mull over a list of potential questions every night before going to bed. He drove up to Boston on a Sunday from his parents home in Connecticut the night before his scheduled session with an HBS admissions official.

On the Monday morning just after the Thanksgiving Day holiday, Kleiner slipped on a dark navy suit, a blue shirt, conservative tie, and black shoes. "Nothing too flashy," he recalls. And then he reported to a small room at Dillon House where two women sat opposite him. One asked the questions, and one feverishly scribbled notes.

Over the next 30 minutes, he received only one question for which he wasn't completely ready for: "What was your proudest moment in college?"

"It caught me off guard because all the questions I had received until then I had prepared for," recalls Kleiner.

After all, it had been nearly four years since Kleiner graduated from Yale University with an undergraduate degree in history. Since then, he had worked for two years as an investment banker at Merrill Lynch in New York and for two more years in private equity at Vector Capital in San Francisco.

He told the HBS admissions staffers how, as president and captain of the university's club ice hockey team, he helped to organize a match against Johns Hopkins University to commemorate the first collegiate ice hockey game ever played.

"It went by in the blink of an eye," recalls Kleiner. "I walked out thinking it had only begun a couple of seconds earlier. But I felt I had done a good job getting my points across. It was actually pretty comforting. Both people were kind and receptive and engaged in our conversation. The second person didn't speak but she would nod and make facial expressions to let me know she was listening to my answers."

Soon enough, Kleiner would be offered a seat in Harvard's class of 2014. Now, as editor-in-chief of The Harbus, the MBA student newspaper, the 28-year-old has found himself leading a team of students who have just published the latest "Unofficial Harvard Business School Interview Guide."

The newest edition of the guide has been substantively revised and updated -- and, at 68 pages long, (up from just 40 pages last year) is the largest ever published by The Harbus. The question that surprised Kleiner -- along with advice on how to approach an answer -- is among 96 questions revealed in the guide. All of those questions come from current students who successfully navigated the HBS admissions process. "We try in our analysis to give insight to what the admissions committee is after for each question," adds Kleiner.

In addition to the questions, which range from the most obvious to the highly unpredictable, the $65 guide contains a new section offering the best general admissions advice from successful HBS applicants. (The money made from the guide goes to support the foundation that publishes The Harbus newspaper). Kleiner and his MBA colleagues, for example, tossed in a section on timing, urging applicants to give themselves at least two months to study for the GMAT and three months to complete the HBS application alone.

The questions, or at least the nearly 100 shared in the guide, cover a fairly vast range of issues and experiences that could easily trip up a candidate. Consider: "What is the most interesting conversation you have had this week?" or "Tell me a piece of news that you are currently following and very interested in?" The latter question is the motivation for the advice to begin a new morning routine on the day you schedule your admissions interview. "Browse all the headlines of all the major business news sites, read any stories that seem particularly pertinent, and be sure to hit up any sites that cover your industry and employer in particular (you don't want to get broadsided during your interview!)."

For Kleiner, the admissions interview worked backwards. "I was asked about my time at my current job and what I liked about it. Then, I was asked about my experience in investment banking before that. She asked why I switched to private equity from banking. I had prepared for that and gave my answer and then we kept going backwards. We started talking a lot about Yale and my experiences there, including why I majored in history and whether I got out of it what I wanted."

As far as he is concerned, the most challenging questions are those that ask you "to brag a little bit or to be introspective. It's not always easy to sit in front of an interviewer and say that to them. The whole interview is crammed into 30 minutes and it is really rapid fire. You don't get much of a reaction to your answers because they're trying to fit in as many questions as possible. It can be very tough for a lot of people, especially those who haven't interviewed for two or three years since they went through the process to get their last job."

Questions on leadership often absorb a good chunk of the interview time. "They definitely ask you a lot of questions on leadership," says Kleiner. "What kind of leader are you? What is your definition of a leader and how might you fit that description? Have you worked with any truly exceptional leaders in your last job and tell me why you thought they were great?"

The most unpredictable question in the guide this year? Kleiner has a few favorites that fit that description, including, "Explain something to me as if I were an eight-year-old."

"It's a funny one that comes up commonly," he says. "The point of this question is to see if you are ready to participate in the case method at HBS. Your own thoughts, however complicated, may have to be explained to 90 people in a classroom, some of whom may be experts in a field and others who may be novices. So they are testing all of that in a very simple question. It's a really good skill to have."

Another common question: "Tell me something you want to start doing, something you want to do more of, and something you want to do less of."

"Professors often ask for similar feedback from their students," says Kleiner. "It's a chance for you to step out and give an honest appraisal of who you are. It forces you to be more concrete than a more typical strength and weakness question."

The guide divides questions into six categories: experience, current events, leadership, situational, career, and curriculum. There also are sections to make your visit to Boston productive: lists of where to go and where to eat, where to shop and where to stay.

And, of course, there is the requisite advice on what to wear: For women, the guide recommends a suit color and style that is simple and classic. "Skirt lengths need to be at least knee length," the editors counsel. "Wear closed toed pumps and a heel height of one-to-three inches." For men, the guidance is Esquire-esque: "Make sure the suit fits properly. Ask a tailor (or your mom).... Suit color palate for the formal interview: black, gray, or navy blue. You may choose plain or (sensible) pinstripes. Reserved sport coat also works, though a good suit is fail-safe."

Kleiner says he relied heavily on the guide to help him prepare for the interview. "I formulated a list of questions, using the interview guide as a starting point. Then, I added more specific questions based on my application and resume. Over the course of a couple of weeks, I would think about them and what my answers would be before I went to bed every night."

So when it came to the sit down for his session, he felt prepared. "As it came to the end, I didn't get an opportunity to ask questions," he recalls. "But they gave me the last word. 'What is one thing you want to convey as your interview comes to an end?' I said that 'I really want to come to Harvard. This is my first choice. This is where I see myself.'" Indeed.

(AP) ? Gains in energy and chemical companies helped nudge the stock market higher Thursday.

The modest move extends a pattern seen this week: Even with plenty of earnings news from big companies, the broader market has shuffled between minor gains and minor losses.

Cabot Oil & Gas and Range Resources reported revenue and earnings that trumped estimates, sending their stocks up 7 percent. Cabot climbed $4.85 to $76.56. Range Resources rose $5.34 to $81.39.

Facebook soared 30 percent after reporting earnings late Wednesday that easily beat analysts' forecasts thanks to higher revenue from ads on mobile devices. Facebook's stock gained $7.85 to $34.36.

Nearly halfway through the second-quarter earnings season, the overall trend looks good, but not great, said Tyler Vernon, chief investment officer of Biltmore Capital in Princeton, N.J. "There have been some big disappointments, like Caterpillar yesterday, but we're seeing better and better numbers coming out."

The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 4.31 points, or 0.3 percent, to close at 1,690.25.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 13.37 points, or 0.1 percent, to 15,555.61. The Dow was held back by Home Depot and Caterpillar, which warned Wednesday that its sales could sag.

The Nasdaq composite index gained 25.59 points, or 0.7 percent, to 3,605.19.

Analysts forecast that companies in the S&P 500 index will report earnings growth of 4.3 percent over the same period last year, according to S&P Capital IQ. At the start of July, the forecast was for growth of 2.8 percent. More than six out of every 10 companies have cleared analysts' earnings targets so far.

Improving profits should help push the S&P 500 index above 1,700 in the coming weeks, Vernon said.

D.R. Horton, the country's largest builder, and PulteGroup said orders for new houses jumped in the second quarter, but their results still fell short of what analysts had expected. PulteGroup also posted a 14 percent decline in profits

D.R. Horton dropped $1.82, or 9 percent, to $19.38. PulteGroup lost $1.90, or 10 percent, to $16.55, the biggest drop of any stock in the S&P 500.

"I think what you're seeing a bit of today is people questioning what higher mortgage rates mean for housing," said JJ Kinahan, chief strategist at TD Ameritrade in Chicago.

In the market for U.S. government bonds, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note was unchanged from late Wednesday at 2.59 percent. Late last week, it was trading at 2.48 percent.

The 10-year yield acts as a benchmark rate for most mortgage loans. A sharp increase in the rate drives up mortgage costs and could slow down sales in the housing market.

It's still very low by historical standards, thanks in large part to the Federal Reserve's massive bond-buying program. The 10-year Treasury yield hit a recent low of 1.63 percent on May 3. By contrast, it was trading around 4 percent in the summer of 2008, shortly before the worst days of the financial crisis.

The Russell 2000 index of small-company stocks set another record high, gaining 10.35 points, or 1 percent, to 1,054.18. The Russell has trounced other indexes this year, gaining 24 percent versus 19 percent for the S&P 500 and the Dow.

Among other stocks making big moves:

? Las Vegas Sands, a major casino operator, fell 55 cents, or 1 percent, to $54.40 after it posted lower revenue and income than financial analysts had expected.

? Visa rose $7.86, or 4 percent, to $194.61. Visa returned to profitability in its third fiscal quarter and reported strong revenue growth as the company processed more transactions worldwide.

Google unveils new Nexus 7, Internet TV device

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Google is betting consumers will pay slightly more for a sleeker, more powerful version of its Nexus 7 tablet as the Internet company escalates its rivalry with Apple and Amazon.com in technology's key battleground ? the mobile computing market.

The fancier devices unveiled Wednesday in San Francisco will go on sale in the U.S next Tuesday in Google's online store and numerous retailers with brick-and-mortar stores.

Among other things, the souped-up line of Nexus tablets will boast a higher-definition 7-inch display screen and a processor that promises to be nearly as twice as fast. Dual stereo speakers have been added for richer sound, and the device's battery duration has been extended to 10 hours for Web browsing, an increase of about an hour.

On other fronts, Google Inc. also unveiled a gadget that will lean on its widely used Chrome Web browser and take aim at Apple on another front ? the living room.

The new device, called Chromecast, is part of the company's attempt to make it easier for people to access Internet content on their TVs. Chromecast is a small stick roughly the same size as a thumb drive that can be plugged into an HDMI port on flat-panel TVs. It brings Netflix, Google's YouTube site and other Internet content to what is usually the biggest screen in households.

Forrester Research analyst Sarah Rotman Epps said Chromecast could undermine Apple in the still-nascent market to plug streaming devices into TVs, just as the Nexus tablets have siphoned some sales away from Apple's iPad.

Google's previous products designed to connect TV sets to the Internet haven't worked out well. The company initially tried to embed an operating system called Google TV into sets made by TV manufacturers, but that flopped. Last year, Google introduced an orb-like device called the Nexus Q in hopes of delivering more Internet video to flat-panel TVs, only to quickly pull the product from the market.

"Chromecast looks like a smart and disruptive device," Rotman Epps said. "Maybe it took the other failures for Google to get it right."

Google wants to have a presence on TVs because it could open up a lucrative new channel for it to sell more ads, which bring in most of its revenue.

In a show of its determination to make inroads on TVs, Google started selling Chromecast for just $35 on Wednesday. That price undercuts the most popular Internet-streaming devices made by Apple and Roku. An Apple TV box sells for $99, while the least expensive Roku box capable of showing high-definition video goes for $80. Roku, a company that formed within Internet video subscription service Netflix Inc., also sells an Internet streaming stick similar to Chromecast for $100.

Earlier this year, Apple revealed that it has sold more than 13 million of its streaming boxes. Roku said its sales of streaming boxes surpassed 5 million units this year.

The Chromecast device connects with smartphones, tablets and personal computers to beam Internet connect to TVs. The Apple and Roku streaming boxes rely on a standard remote control to select Internet content.

As an enticement to get people to try Chromecast, Google is offering three months of free Netflix service with a purchase of the Internet-streaming stick. That translates to a $24 value, leaving the cost of the device at $11 for those who would have gotten Netflix anyway.

As for the Nexus 7, the extra firepower added to the second generation of the tablets will come with a higher price. A model with 16 gigabytes of storage will sell for $229, a $30 per increase from the current Nexus 7 released a year ago. That's still 30 percent below the $329 that Apple Inc. charges for its iPad Mini. A comparable Kindle Fire HD tablet from Amazon.com Inc. currently sells for $199.

A 32-gigabyte version of the Nexus 7 will sell for $269, a $20 price increase.

The price hike for the Nexus 7 comes at a time when more people have been showing a preference for less expensive tablets. Google helped propel the trend with last year's introduction of the Nexus line, contributing to pressure for Apple to come out with the iPad Mini as an alternative to its top-selling tablets with a 10-inch screen.

Google is confident the Nexus 7 will still look like a great value once consumers see how much more powerful the new models are, said Sundar Pichai, an executive who oversees the company's Android and Chrome software.

The iPad Mini has driven down the average selling price of Apple's tablets, hurting the Cupertino, Calif., company's profit margins.

Even at a lower price, the Nexus tablets haven't been as popular as the iPad. Pichai said the Nexus products account for about 10 percent, or 7 million, of the roughly 70 million tablets now running Android software.

In the first half of this year alone, Apple sold 34 million iPads, including full-size models.

Amazon.com doesn't disclose its sales of Kindle Fires, which run on a modified version of Android. The research firm IDC estimates about 1.8 million Kindle Fires were sold during the first three months of this year.

The Nexus 7 will be the first device to get the 4.3 version of its Android software. It's a relatively minor upgrade from the "Jelly Bean" flavor of Android. Google still hasn't said when it will release a more comprehensive Android overhaul, currently known as "Key Lime Pie."

As with the original line of Nexus 7s, the new devices are being made by AsusTek Computer Inc., working from Google's design.

Google is still tinkering with a new line of Nexus tablets with 10-inch display screens. The Mountain View, Calif., company also hasn't updated its Nexus 4 phones, though it worked with phone makers to release variants of Samsung's Galaxy S4 and HTC's One this summer. The variants run a pure version of Android, without the customizations added by the phone makers.

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) ? Two decorated U.S. war veterans who survived one of the worst battles of the Korean War found themselves among former foes at a memorial ceremony as North Korean leader Kim Jong Un launched the country's commemoration of the war's end 60 years ago.

It's unusual for American veterans to attend official events surrounding the July 27 war anniversary in North Korea, called "Victory Day" here. The veterans are in North Korea on a mission to find the remains of a fellow aviator killed in the war, and were given little notice about the event.

Thursday's ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil a new cemetery for war veterans was brief and solemn, with no speeches. Soldiers stood at guard as a military band played the national anthem. Kim, dressed in a dark blue Mao suit, saluted and left a basket of flowers bearing a banner with his name before the memorial.

The Korean War, pitting North Korean and Chinese troops against U.S.-led United Nations and South Korean forces, ended with an armistice on July 27, 1953. A peace treaty was never signed, leaving the Korean Peninsula in a technical state of war and divided at the 38th parallel.

That has not stopped the North Koreans from calling July 27 "Victory Day." Brightly colored banners with the words "Victory" and "War Victory" fluttered from buildings across the capital city. The North Korean government is expected to use the anniversary to draw attention to the division of the Korean Peninsula and to rally support for Kim.

Kim took power following the death of his father, Kim Jong Il, in late 2011. As leader, he has overseen two long-range rocket launches and a nuclear test that have drawn international condemnation and tightened U.N. sanctions.

North Koreans have been gearing up for months for the milestone war anniversary. Soldiers were assigned to carry out an extensive renovation of the Korean War museum. Students rehearsed every afternoon for a new war-themed rendition of the "Arirang" mass games song-and-dance performance, which opened Tuesday. And citizens got down on their hands and knees in the lead-up to help lay sod and plant grass as part of a massive greening of Pyongyang.

The anniversary is taking place as North Korea copes with flooding from the seasonal monsoon rains that strike the peninsula every July. Eight people were killed, more than 4,500 homes destroyed and 17,700 left homeless this week, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.

And in a reminder of the tensions that still roil the divided peninsula, Pyongyang on Thursday threatened to reposition troops at a stalled inter-Korean factory park at a North Korean border town. The warning, which Pyongyang has made before, came after failed talks to reopen the factory park that was a rare symbol of cooperation between the rivals before it was shuttered in April amid tension.

Scores of foreign visitors have arrived in Pyongyang this week, including a planeload of journalists from the U.S., Japan, China, Russia and elsewhere. China's vice president, Li Yuanchao, met with North Korean leader Kim on Thursday.

Li told Kim that his delegation has a mission to "preserve and glorify down through generations the blood-sealed militant friendship" between the countries and China remains firm on its policy to steadily consolidate bilateral ties, according to Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency. Kim replied North Korea will always remember China's assistance during the Korean War and that boosting bilateral ties is also his country's "steadfast will," it said.

Li conveyed to Kim a verbal message of Chinese leader Xi Jinping, KCNA said without elaborating.

The two Americans, retired U.S. Navy Capt. Thomas Hudner , of Concord, Massachusetts, and Dick Bonelli, a former U.S. Marine from Englewood, Florida, are in North Korea on a mission to revisit Jangjin County, better known to Americans as the Chosin Reservoir ? site of one of the deadliest battles of the Korean War.

"It's a very emotional occasion to be here with so many veterans ? not only the veterans but also the people of the nation who turned out to show their support to all of veterans," said Hudner, who received the Medal of Honor for trying to save his downed wingman, Ensign Jesse Brown, at the Chosin Reservoir in 1950.

"And as an American veteran, I am delighted to see that our former foe and we share some of the same feelings about this," Hudner said.

The monument to veterans is the centerpiece of a sprawling national military cemetery in Pyongyang's outskirts.

One North Korean, Pak Chun Son, sobbed as she paid her respects at the gravestone of her father, Pak Hyon Jong, who died in the war when she was 5.

"My father will be honored on this hill forever," said her brother, Pak Yun Yong, who was 8 when their father died. He was dressed in a military uniform weighed down by medals. Tears sprang to his eyes. "We want to raise our children to be patriots like their grandfather was."

Commemorations also are taking place in South Korea and the United States.

South Korean President Park Geun-hye attended a memorial event Tuesday in the southern city of Busan to pay her respects to the troops who defended South Korea during the war.

U.S. President Barack Obama is to give a speech Saturday at the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington.

Perk's Reward-Centric Mobile Browser Now Blocks Unwanted Ads

perk-block-adsAustin-based incubator Jutera Labs is putting even more of its weight behind Perk, a rewards-centric mobile web browser that blocks out ads when used on tablets. Perk, which originally started out as a way to give consumers coupons, discounts or airline miles while browsing the web, is now blocking ads. While companies like AdBlock have built up strong web-based businesses with more than 200 million downloads, Perk co-founder Julian Frachtman says that there’s a window of opportunity to do the same thing on tablets, especially as they cannibalize PC usage. The company partners with affiliate networks to give Perk users deals at about 2,000 online stores. Those stores include big brands like Amazon, Target, Best Buy and Starbucks. There are also deals for frequent-flier miles at airlines like Delta, US Airways and Alaska Airlines and charitable donations to non-profits like the American Cancer Society. Users can explicitly opt-in to these rewards, and there’s a shopping icon in the app’s top bar that lets users scroll through different rewards available to them based on points they’ve earned by browsing the web. “When people shop online or when they do research online or take other actions like watch videos and fill out surveys, they can redeem these actions for cash or frequent flier miles,” Frachtman said. He says one advantage of blocking ads is that the browser will load pages faster. The app is still quite small at this point with 5,000 monthly actives, but Frachtman said that once they figure out the lifetime value of a typical Perk user, they can use performance marketing techniques to grow the base. For now, Perk is only available for iOS, but the company plans to bring it to Android in a month-and-a-half. Jutera has raised about $1 million in funding and the company’s employee base is split between Austin, Texas and Bangalore, India.

Meatball the bear to be star of Glendale's Rose Parade float

He has been feared. And loved. And worried over. And touted as a new-style ursine celebrity in the Twitter age.

Now Meatball the bear ? or at least his happy-go-lucky, mechanical likeness ? will be the centerpiece of a Rose Parade float sponsored by Glendale, the mountain-rimmed city he just couldn't keep his paws from throughout much of last year.

"It's going to be a head turner," said Glendale Mayor Dave Weaver, speaking of a 35-foot-long float featuring Meatball rising from a trash can, a concept approved by the Glendale City Council this week.

"People really came to care about that bear," Weaver added. "We've got to make sure the snout looks like Meatball's snout, because if not folks are going to say, 'Hey, that's not my bear!'"

At the New Year's Day parade, Meatball will be seen by roughly 700,000 attendees and 84 million television viewers worldwide ? a warm-hearted, high-profile embrace by a municipality that once considered him a potentially dangerous nuisance.

The 400-pound black bear burst into the limelight in March 2012, when he broke into a refrigerator at a Glendale residence and treated himself to Costco meatballs. Also known as "Glen Bearian" or @TheGlendaleBear on Twitter, Meatball proved smarter and more persistent than your average bear. He managed to return again and again to the city's neighborhoods, foraging not just for meatballs but for tuna and oranges and other tossed-away food. He often appeared only on days when residents would put out their trash bins.

As residents were told to stay indoors for their safety, California Department of Fish and Game officials shot Meatball with sleep-inducing darts and trucked him off to a nearby forest. But somehow he found his way back to the Glendale area, forcing wardens to tranquilize him and send him packing again.

In August ? his social-media-fueled popularity approaching Yogi Bear status ? Meatball returned to the foothills once more, only this time he was caught in La Ca?ada Flintridge and shipped off to a wild animal preserve 45 miles east of San Diego.

Meatball no longer prowls Glendale, but his memory certainly lives on there. On Tuesday night the cash-strapped City Council unanimously approved spending $155,000 on the float, an increase in cost of about 50% over recent Glendale floats. City officials justified the expense because this will be the 100th Rose Parade float sponsored by the city. They also hope to raise at least half of the money from private sources.

So far, however, fundraising is far off that target: $10,000 has been pledged by a Glendale developer, but only $160 by residents.

Weaver said he was sure donations would pour in once news spread about the Meatball theme.

"The idea is already a huge success," he said. "We wanted something fun, whimsical and friendly, and that's Meatball. He's been adopted by Glendale."

Titled "Let's Be Neighbors" and standing about 18 feet tall, the float will showcase the notion that residents must live in harmony with wildlife. Surrounded by smaller animals, Meatball will take center stage, his massive head and torso rising in and out of a tall trash can.

With plans to ship him to Colorado having fallen through, Meatball currently lives in a small pen about the size of a master bedroom, said Bobbi Brink, director of the Lions, Tigers & Bears animal sanctuary near San Diego. Brink explained that the bear is kept in the cordoned-off area because of fears he might fight with another bear on the property.

Brink said construction should finish soon on a lush, 6-acre area in which Glendale's favorite bear will be able to roam freely.

Jimmy Fallon is a dad.

The royal baby isn't the only famous newborn out there. "Late Night" host Jimmy Fallon and wife Nancy Juvonen Fallon welcomed a baby girl Tuesday, People magazine reports.

The couple is "overjoyed about the arrival of their beautiful daughter," their representative told People.

The Fallon baby arrived on the scene just one day after Prince William and wife Catherine welcomed a boy.

As with the royal bundle of joy, no name has been announced for the Fallon baby either.

While Fallon hasn't commented on his child yet, he tweeted on Monday about the royal arrival, writing, "Kate Middleton went into labor this morning. When the rest of the royal family heard, they said, 'Oh my God -- what's 'labor'?"

Cook States that iOS in the Car is "Very Important" to Apple

Published on 07-23-2013 09:44 PM

During the Q&A portion of today?s third quarter earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook was asked about iOS in the Car, which was a highlight of the company?s keynote presentation at WWDC. As a response to the question, Cook said that it was an important ?part of the ecosystem,? categorizing it with the App Store, iTunes, messaging and Siri. According to Cook:

"Having something in the automobile is very important. It?s something people want." He went on to say that Apple could "do it in a unique way better than anyone else," and that it was a "key focus" for the company. The iOS in the Car feature is designed to provide enhanced iOS integration in automobiles, offering hands-free controls that allow drivers to access maps, get directions, and control music by displaying content in the navigation screen of the car. The description of the feature mentions the following: iOS in the Car seamlessly integrates your iOS device ? and the iOS experience ? with your in-dash system. If your vehicle is equipped with iOS in the Car, you can connect your iPhone 5 and interact with it using the car?s built-in display and controls or Siri Eyes Free. Now you can easily and safely make phone calls, access your music, send and receive messages, get directions, and more. It?s all designed to let iPhone focus on what you need, so you can focus on the road. As of right now, the feature is expected to be integrated into a number of new cars in 2014, from manufacturers like Acura, Chevrolet, Ferrari, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Jaguar, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Opel and Volvo. According to settings hidden within iOS 7, iOS in the car may potentially work over AirPlay in addition to USB. The feature is said to be officially unveiled later this year alongside the release of iOS 7.

Are any of you looking forward to the feature?

Pressurized virus blasts its infectious DNA into human cells

[unable to retrieve full-text content]The virus that causes those painful lip blisters known as cold sores has an internal pressure eight times higher than a car tire, and uses it to literally blast its infectious DNA into human cells, scientists are reporting in a new study. Discovery of the pressure-driven infection mechanism -- the first in a human virus -- opens the door to new treatments for viral infections, they add in a new study.

Samsung puts the new Exynos 5 Octa 5420 SoC up against a Nexus 10 at SIGGRAPH 2013 handson video

In case you were already snoozin' when Samsung made its announcement late yesterday, the company is here at SIGGRAPH 2013 eager to show off the muscle behind its new chip. Before the exhibitions start officially, we had a chance to nab a look at a reference tablet running the Exynos 5 Octa 5420 SoC alongside ARM's Mali T-628 silicon packing six cores. For comparison purposes, the prototype unit was matched against a Nexus 10 tablet and its 1.7GHz Exynos 5 Dual 5250. Our first impression? The 5420 ran GLBenchmark's 2.7.0 T-Rex on-screen test noticeably (read: a lot) smoother than the Nexus 10 and the final scores confirmed the performance boost that we previously reported. We also had a look at both the Unreal Engine's Citadel (up to 45fps at times) and Unity Chase on the test device with both further demonstrating silky smooth transitions and brisk graphic renders. There's no word on when the chip will make it into your next mobile device, but it is scheduled to go into production next month. For a quick look at the two tablets side by side, we'll refer you to the video embedded just beyond the break.

Reid And Boehner On A Debt Limit Collision Course

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) each laid down incompatible positions on the debt limit Tuesday, possibly setting the stage for another round of brinksmanship this fall over whether the federal government will default on its obligations.

?We are not negotiating on the debt ceiling,? Reid told reporters. ?The President has said this. I?ve said it. And I don?t know how many more times we need to say that.?

He was responding to a question about whether he?d consider GOP demands such as defunding Obamacare or significantly cutting spending in exchange for raising the debt limit.

Just hours earlier, Boehner put down an equally categorical marker.

?We?re not going to raise the debt ceiling without real cuts in spending. It?s as simple as that,? he said. He floated the so-called ?Boehner rule? requiring dollar-for-dollar cuts, which Democrats acceded to in 2011 in order to raise the debt limit, as the right way to go.

Privately and publicly, White House officials insist that they won?t negotiate on the debt ceiling under any circumstances, and that it?s Congress? duty to make sure the United States continues to pay its bills. Burned by the failed deficit talks of 2011, senior Obama aides also don?t trust Boehner to deliver Republican votes even if he does want a deal. (A running joke in the White House is that Boehner couldn?t deliver a pizza.)

Boehner, in particular, faces huge challenges within his conference.

His leadership team backed down earlier this year in the face of Democrats? insistence that they won?t negotiate on the debt ceiling, convincing members to vote to increase temporarily the limit in exchange for forcing Senate Democrats to pass a budget. He now faces a conference full of vocal lawmakers who are demanding actual spending cuts and insist they won?t settle for anything less. Already aggrieved by the possibility of leadership violating the majority-of-the-majority principle on matters like immigration reform and the farm bill, they?re working to back Boehner into a corner.

Meanwhile, a significant faction of more moderate Senate Republicans, tired of going along with routine obstruction, are rising up against tea party conservatives and pushing for more cooperation with Democrats, be it on the budget, immigration or presidential nominees.

?I do think that some folks are starting to re-evaluate the consequence of giving a handful of very junior, very ideological Senators the unfettered ability to drive our side,? said an aide to a veteran Republican senator, speaking on condition of anonymity. ?I think we may have learned in the recent crisis that having the sheer volume of objections at the same time is not in our interests. It makes it harder to argue the high ground.?

All the while, Boehner has repeatedly insisted that default is not an option, leaving many Democrats to conclude that he?s bluffing by suggesting he won?t permit a debt limit increase. On Tuesday his spokesman Brendan Buck called on Democrats to compromise.

President Obama will bring economy message to Florida

President Obama will travel to Jacksonville on Thursday and deliver remarks at the Port Authority as part of a series of events scheduled to focus on the economy, the White House announced Monday.

The larger trip, which was announced last week shortly after the president spoke about racism in the wake of the not guilty verdict in the Zimmerman trial, is intended as part of a nationwide campaign aimed at emphasizing the administration?s attempt to build the economy by boosting the middle class. But in Florida, the president?s remarks also are likely to be viewed in the context of the racial issues festering since the Zimmerman verdict.

At his surprise visit to the White House briefing room last week, Obama called on states such as Florida to reexamine Stand Your Ground laws and he invoked concerns that the laws may ?encourage the kinds of altercations, confrontations, and tragedies as we saw in the Florida case, rather than defuse potential altercations.?

Since then, dozens of protesters continue a sit-in outside Gov. Rick Scott?s Tallahassee office, demanding the Legislature convene a special session to repeal the Stand Your Ground law and address the disparities in sentencing for black teens. The governor and legislative leaders have said they oppose changing the law and refuse to call a session.

Obama will begin his ?focus on the economy? tour in his home state of Illinois where he will deliver a major address at Knox College in western Illinois on Wednesday, the White House said.

Obama believes Washington ?has taken its eye off the ball on the most important issue facing the country,?? said White House senior advisor Dan Pfeiffer in an email Sunday. The president will ?lay out his vision for rebuilding an economy that puts the middle class and those fighting to join it front and center,?? he said.

Pfeiffer bashed the infighting that has paralyzed progress in Congress saying, ?instead of talking about how to help the middle class, too many in Congress are trying to score political points, refight old battles and trump up phony scandals.?

But Pfeiffer?s comments supplied a convenient opening for the Republican Party of Florida, which launched an ?Eye Off the Ball? series on its web site Monday to chide the president.

?We, too, have noticed the president?s lack of leadership on the economy,? said Susan Hepworth, RPOF spokeswoman. The party has posted a mock-up of the president throwing a football and suggesting his speaking tour is ?a Hail Mary pass on the economy.?
