Glued to my Crafts: Home Grown Flowers {Craft}

Today's kid craft is relatively simple and inspired by the book The Tiny Seed {World of Eric Carle}

The Tiny Seed tells a story about a little seed and it's life cycle of becoming a flower. Like all Eric Carle books, the pictures are beautiful & colorful. Lil Man loved reading this book with me.

So after reading it together, I decided we needed to do a craft to go along with it. Hence the reason why I'm posting today - to share our Home Grown Flowers craft. Not only is this a fun craft to pass the time, but it also makes for fun decorations around the house. Plus your child can easily gift them too!

Ready to learn how we did it?

Above are all the supplies I used for this one craft. However, you can easily substitute things for what you have on hand. {This is why I love kid crafts! Your kids won't care if you replace things}

* Popsicle sticks
* Various colors of glitter
* White school glue
* Paper plate/paint brushes
* Hot glue gun
* Styrofoam cups
* Styrofoam balls {they should fit inside your cups}
* Wood flower cutouts {Michaels}

Here's a closer view of the wood flower cutouts I used. I purchased this at Michaels this past spring. I don't believe they still have them, but I have seen other versions in various craft stores.

If you can't find them, you can change these out with paper flower cutouts.

So first, I laid out all the wood flowers on a flat surface. Then I put some glue on a paper plate, along with the paint brush. After that, it was all on Lil Man. I just asked him to paint each piece with the white school glue.
Before the glue dried completely, I gave Lil Man the glitter shakers and told him to go wild!
While Lil Man was in glitter heaven, I was assembling the "planters" and getting the hot glue gun ready. This allowed him to really be himself and craft away. I'm starting to notice that the second I get the camera out and hover over him, he tends to be stand-offish. I have to realize that I can't "always" be the helicopter mom. {oh the learning lessons of a bloggy mom!}
So once he gave me the go ahead and told me, "All done!" it was time to hot glue the flower pieces to the popsicle sticks.

After I did this little part, I thought to myself - "We really should have painted the popsicle sticks green!" But of course- these things don't come to me, until after we're almost done.

Once the hot glue was settled into place and completely cooled down, it was time to stick our flowers in their new planters. With a little pressure, just stick them into the Styrofoam ball. Arrange them however you want.
And that's it! Display them proudly or give them away as gifts.

Want to be more creative with yours? Like I mentioned above, you can paint the popsicle sticks green or you can paint the flower pieces different colors first, then add the glitter. You can also decorate the "planters" to really give it a one of a kind look.

Whatever you decide to do, have fun with it!

This weekend I'm going to be sharing how we crafted with a salad spinner. Yup, you read that right. You won't want to miss it, so be sure to come back!
