artist exhibition, Art Association galleries, JAMES A.DePIETRO ...

AAH Board Member Steve Feinour is the sponsor of the four-artist exhibition slated to open on Friday, November 30, with a reception from 5 to 8 PM. Board Member Anne Davis is the reception host, with music provided by the Barrie Spessler Jazz Duo. Featured artists will be JAMES A.DePIETRO of Allentown, MICHAEL LAHR of Carlisle, BOB McCORMICK of Ashland, and KAREN VANCE of Lancaster.

JAMES DePIETRO, born in Bethlehem, PA, earned degrees from Kutztown and Wilkes Universities, and taught art? in the Bethlehem Area School District for 35 years. While continuing to be an advocate for the inclusion of the arts in education, DePietro now focuses on his art career, with his paintings exhibited in Audubon Artists and American Artists Professional League in New York, as well as in Pennsylvania galleries. DePietro?s paintings to be shown at AAH are from? his ?Flora and Animalia? series, as well as mixed-media works from ?Deconstructions.?Both series emphasize his on-going theme of our living world.

MICHAEL LAHR finds challenges in the contrast of interior versus exterior, or still-life versus cityscape. In still-life, the artist can physically arrange objects, while in cityscape imagery one ?tries to cope with the huge complexity of the outside world.? Lahr finds that while working in both areas at once, he is energized by their ability to shift his focus and to offer new challenges. ?In the end, though, it all comes down to paint, colour, form and space?and one?s ability to balance these complex elements.? Lahr holds his MFA in painting from The Catholic University of America.

BOB McCORMICK has been painting for the past ten years, but until his retirement as a high school English teacher last June, his art was done at night or on weekends, and at workshops during summer breaks. Now, McCormick tends to shy away from over-thinking his paintings, after all those decades of encouraging analytical thinking in his students. He finds his inspiration in the local landscape of Northeast Pennsylvania, although he also paints sights encountered in his travels. His ?Pennsylvania Impressions? series to be featured at AAH showcases the farms that surround his house, with vivid colours and geometric shapes suggesting the fertile soil and utilitarian structures.

KAREN VANCE works from both landscapes and still-lifes to explore the idea of nature-versus-man-made structure. In her landscapes, Vance shows nature dominating the space, overpowering man-made objects. In her still-life paintings, however, the natural object is something contained and carefully observed. Vance graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design in Lancaster in 2010.

The exhibition will continue at the Art Association galleries, 21 North Front Street, Harrisburg, through January 3. Visit www.artassocofhbg.com or call 717-236-1432 for more information.
