Zobrist homer keeps Rays' playoff hopes alive (AP)

BOSTON ? Ben Zobrist hit a two-run homer off Jon Lester on Saturday to lead the Tampa Bay Rays to a 4-3 victory over the Red Sox and trim Boston's lead in the AL wild-card race to three games.

Jeff Niemann (11-7) pitched five solid innings for Tampa Bay, which has won seven of its last eight against Boston. The Red Sox have lost 10 of their last 13 games since Sept. 3, when they led the wild-card race by nine games.

Joel Peralta pitched the ninth for his fourth save.

Lester (15-8) went just four innings against Tampa Bay last Sunday, giving up four runs but throwing 111 pitches to lose for the first time in six starts. He was better this time, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks and striking out five in seven innings.

But the result was the same.

For the second straight night, the Rays got to Boston's starter in the first. Desmond Jennings walked to lead off the game and scored on Zobrist's homer off the top of the Green Monster. Tampa added another run in the third when Jennings doubled and, after moving up on a groundout, scored on a wild pitch.

The Red Sox made it 3-2 in the bottom half when Mike Aviles hit an RBI double and scored on a sacrifice fly, but Evan Longoria's run-scoring single in the fifth made it 4-2.

Carl Crawford singled to lead off the seventh against reliever Matt Moore and scored on Jacoby Ellsbury's groundout to cut the deficit to 4-3, but Moore fanned Dustin Pedroia with Ellsbury on third to end the inning.

David Ortiz hit a long fly ball off Moore in the eighth, but B.J. Upton caught it at the warning track in front of the Boston bullpen.

Aviles had three hits, including a single up the middle with two out in the ninth. But Peralta got Marco Scutaro on a grounder to third to end the game.

Boston is batting just .123 against Niemann, who gave up four hits in five innings, walking two and striking out six.

NOTES: Red Sox RHP Clay Buchholz, who hasn't pitched since June 16 because of a back injury, threw 30 pitches off a mound and said he would still like to return this year if Boston makes the playoffs. ... RHP Bobby Jenks said his pulmonary embolism is being treated with medication and he expects to be ready for the start of spring training. ... Boston INF Kevin Youkilis missed his second straight game with a sports hernia. ... Longoria has 12 RBIs in five games. .... Zobrist has 10 RBIs in 10 games after getting 1 in his previous 12. ... David Price (12-12) faces Tim Wakefield (7-6) in the finale on Sunday. Wakefield is coming off his 200th career victory. He has 186 wins with the Red Sox, second to Roger Clemens and Cy Young, who are tied with 192.

It?s all in the head: Songbirds with bigger brains have benefited from the end of communism

ScienceDaily (Sep. 15, 2011) ? According to a new study published in Biological Conservation the abundance of songbirds with relatively large brains in Eastern Germany and the Czech Republic has increased since 1989 / 1990. Researchers from German Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-F) and Czech Charles University in collaboration with "Dachverband Deutscher Avifaunisten" (Federation of German Avifaunists) had compared population trends of bird species in different European regions. The increase in large-brained songbirds is attributed to the better cognitive abilities of the species enabling them better adaption to the socio-economic changes affecting habitats after the end of communism.

Long-term study of 57 species of songbirds

As part of the study German and Czech scientists investigated the population trends of 57 species of from 1991 to 2007. Data on the abundances of songbird species in Germany was provided by the German "Dachverband Deutscher Avifaunisten" whose volunteers have been operating large-scaling bird monitoring schemes for years. The researchers then tested if individual species' traits and the change in their habitat had a significant effect on population trends. Traits that were matched to population trends included habitat, dietary and climatic niche, migration strategy and brain size in relation to body size. Furthermore researchers wanted to know whether the effects were only regional or universal. In order to find out three different adjacent regions, North-Western, Eastern Germany and the Czech Republic, were compared.

End of communism favored birds with bigger brains

The scientists thus discovered that regional differences in population trends among songbird species are linked to their brain size. Large brain size was correlated to strong increases of respective songbird species in the Czech Republic since 1989 / 1990, weaker increases in Eastern Germany and had no effect in North-Western Germany. This difference between the former 'West' and 'East' suggests that this trend was driven by socio-economic changes that took place in the former communist regions. "Relative brain size reflects species' cognitive abilities. The increase of such songbirds suggests that species with good cognitive abilities might have been better able to adapt to rapid socioeconomic change and make use of the novel opportunities that arose after the end of communism." Dr. Katrin Boehning-Gaese, researcher at the Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-F) and professor at Goethe-University, Frankfurt am Main, explains.

Better cognitive abilities allow spreading into new habitats

In particular, birds with better cognitive abilities made use of the opportunity to colonize the cities in East Germany and the Czech Republic. After 1989 / 1990 the inner cities saw an increase in green areas and growing volume of parks, whereas at the same time a newly emerging middle class moved away resulting in a housing boom on the outskirts. Large-brained songbird species such as the Common Magpies, Eurasian Jays and Blue and Grey Tits, show a high behavioral flexibility and hence are better able to live near humans. They could rapidly spread into the new habitats such as new urban greens and suburbs and increase in population size. In contrast, smaller-brained songbird species with less cognitive abilities, such as the Whitethroat, were less able to adapt. The housing boom thus decreased habitat availability for behaviorally less flexible species.

Across the regions birds that are not too picky did better

The study also identifies two other external factors, agricultural intensification and climate change, that had a similar impact in all three examined regions. Bird species with a wider dietary and climatic niche and short-distance migration strategies were on the uptake. In contrast, bird species with a narrower dietary and climatic niche as well as long-distance migration strategies have declined. "The study demonstrates that whereas some factors determine bird population trends in multiple regions, others, in this case the timing of urbanization, act region-specifically." Boehning-Gaese comments. The authors therefore suggest that future studies should consider more regions. This would enable comparison of relationships between socioeconomic change and its impact on bird populations across nations.

Trial delayed for Mass. man accused in terror plot (AP)

BOSTON ? A judge has granted a request by attorneys for a Massachusetts man accused of conspiring to kill American troops in Iraq to delay the start of his trial.

The trial of Tarek Mehanna of Sudbury is now set to begin Oct. 24, three weeks later than originally scheduled.

The judge says he doesn't agree that the original date would've hurt Mehanna's case, but prosecutors consented to the delay.

Mehanna's attorneys have said prosecutors didn't turn over evidence in time for them to prepare for the trial.

Prosecutors say they've consistently given the defense evidence throughout the case.

Prosecutors say Mehanna sought training in a terrorist camp and translated a publication on ways to wage Muslim holy war. The defense says his activities amounted to free speech.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The "Big Brother" results aren't giving Rachel Reilly reason to pout.

After being locked away from the outside world for 75 days, the weepy "Big Brother" veteran emerged Wednesday as the winner of CBS' voyeuristic reality TV competition. The show's seven-person jury selected the 26-year-old cocktail waitress from Los Angeles to win the $500,000 grand prize over 23-year-old newbie contestant Porsche Briggs from Miami.

"I was a target since I walked into this house," argued Reilly.

At the beginning of the 13th season, the flame-haired Reilly entered the "Big Brother" abode with fiance Brendon Villegas, a 31-year-old graduate student. The pair met last summer as competitors on the show's 12th edition. The ups and downs of their relationship ? and the game ? resulted in frequent emotional outbursts from Reilly throughout the summer.

"Oh, it's going to be a very hard decision," Villegas joked as he cast his vote for his fiance.

Reilly, who secured four of the seven-person jury's votes, dominated the 13th season by winning several competitions with her veteran alliance and openly targeting the batch of newbie players. She was never able to keep Villegas safe though. He was voted off the show twice after a game-changing twist allowed him to return during the fifth week of competition.

"Rachel, you're lucky this is not a personality contest," said 25-year-old fellow veteran Daniele Donato, the only returning player to go against the vets, as she cast her vote for Briggs.
