Ouch. L.A. mayor trips on big name

The Democrats' pre-primary convention is just under way and already we have a gaffe of the first order.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (right) was a featured speaker this morning as the event began at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

This well-spoken visitor from the West Coast proceeded to name various New Mexico politicians, including its fine U.S. senator, "Mark Udall."

Mark Udall is indeed a senator, but he is from Colorado.

His cousin Tom Udall is New Mexico's junior senator. Tom Udall will ascend after the retirement this year of Sen. Jeff Bingaman, who has represented New Mexico for 30 years.

Democrats had better hope they are more versed in details than the mayor.

Villaraigosa's speech, too long and too loud, will mean nothing in the long term. But it is telling that even accomplished politicians do not pay attention to specifics or to history.

President Lincoln spoke for two minutes when he delievered the Gettysburg Address. Almost 150 years later we are still talking about his clarity, conviction and brevity.
